It’s pretty obvious that I have areas of high strength and areas where I absolutely suck, such as math and languages. I’ve also taking three years of bio, because I find it really interesting. I obviously haven’t taken SAT’s or ACT’s, but I got a 610 on Reading, 650 on Writing, and 550 on Math on my PSAT this fall.

Reading: 750
Writing:750
Math: 610 (hopefully!!)

Excellent rec’s and I’m really good at writing unique essays. I’m also from Vermont and a full pay student. My biggest strength is that I want to major in African Studies, and go into that field. Its my passion, and that’s a hook, as a white girl from New England. Barnard is my dream school, I really, really, really, want to go there. I obviously have some negatives that are pretty clear, but I’m hoping there’s enough good to balance out the ugly.

your grades are obviously not that good. However, you’re extracurriculars are decent. I’d recommend to boost you GPA in junior year, get an awesome SAT score, add more extracurriculars, and write awesome essays.

I think you have a great chance! Please don’t get discouraged. My grades are similar to yours (I have a c for a math class I took last year), but Barnard is my DREAM school. You are unique and unique is what they are looking for. They don’t just want robots at the school. You wanting to engage in African studies is truly unique! As long as they see how passionate you are for the school and a particular hobby/interest then I think you have a great chance. Make sure to do an interview (and or visit the campus if at all possible). But don’t give up. Grades are not everything. I met with a rep and she stressed how they look for passionate students.

I really do think you have a fighting chance! Your resume looks like you are well rounded and involved in the community. I’d try to apply ED which would boost your chances. If you are really passionate about Barnard, then ED is the way to go.
