@childishlandino I can’t tell you how much of a factor financials are in admissions for transfer students because I simply don’t know. But although the admissions office would probably tell you that it is not a big part of the admissions process, I am sure it does play some role in their decisions. Colleges are businesses after all, and they need to make money to survive. However, I can tell you that I have met transfers who both receive financial aid and those who don’t. Hope that helps!
Hi everyone! Does anyone have any insight into what our course descriptions should look like on our application? Does it matter how we format it in Word? Is there a form that we’re supposed to fill out that I haven’t seen?
I believe its all done on the common app! not through any additional word docs. Additionally, your current institution should send an official transcript and college report.
@saderobinsonacts When I transferred two years ago, it was not done on Common App. It was just a Word document where you write the course name and copy and paste your school’s course description underneath the name. This should be super low effort on your part! Just be sure it looks neat (and I think you need to include your name and birth date at the top of every page, or at least that’s what I did). However, I am unsure what the current protocol for submitting course descriptions is.
The course descriptions should be a low-stress part of the application. It is only used to evaluate your transfer credits if you are admitted.
Has anyone received anything from Barnard since submitting the application? I sent mine in almost 2 weeks ago and I never received an email or access to an applicant portal as other schools do
@vinylraincoat Have the GE’s been hard to get done as a transfer? This might be unclear, but is there a common thread that you found in your transfer cohort?
@brightplaces They can double count, so for example, I can have the same class count for humanities and my major. Chances are you have also fulfilled quite a bit of them at your current institution. I had a hard time completing the “Thinking Quantitatively” and social science requirements, but that is less of a transfer thing and more that those types of classes are not within my interests.
@vinylraincoat Thank you so much for your consistent and constantly helpful responses! What has been your favorite part about transferring to Barnard thus far? As you had mentioned earlier, you are closer to graduation, what will you miss the most? Sorry if this is invasive. I’m just very curious.
@brightplaces My favorite part about Barnard is the wide range of courses and academic programs that I would have not gotten to experience if I stayed at my old college. Between Barnard and Columbia, it is hard to think of an academic program that is not offered.
I have become really close with some of my professors and friends from my seminars. I will miss them the most.

@corinnaolson I was wondering the same thing. I submitted mine on Feb 28th and still haven’t gotten anything. I’m thinking they might start sending out portals after March 15th.
hi guys!! how many letters of recommendation are you guys submitting? how many do you guys think is appropriate?
@childishlandino yeah that makes sense! i was worried something was wrong cause i submitted mine mid-February too, but we’ll see when march 15 rolls around
@ah3rtttt I submitted 2 just because some of my other schools required 2 so I decided to send them to all, but Barnard only requires 1 so 1 is absolutely enough!
Hello everyone! I am planning on submitting my application by the end of this week, I am just wondering if you guys know if there will be any application extensions not only for Barnard but for other colleges? I am also applying to Columbia as a transfer, and they extended their deadline to March 13th. Please let me know! Thanks
Hello! does anyone know if the Visiting students only question on the transfer application was mandatory it didn’t let me submit my application without it . I already submitted my application but I’ve just been unsure .
@mairaruby I just put “n/a” on my application because they needed something but since im applying as a fall transfer I didn’t need to put anything on.
Hi guys, I’m applying as a sophomore transfer from Notre Dame! I love Barnard and I also applied to Columbia, NYU, and Northwestern. Good luck!
Hi there, is it correct that they extended their deadline to 4/1?
Yes, it says so on the website! Unfortunate that they did not tell us before 3/15, because I was moving out of my college (COVID-19) and rather hastily submitted. I’m wondering if there is any way for Barnard to send the application back? Or cancel it so we can submit a new one? I believe my app would really benefit from more time and I wish I had known the deadline would be extended sooner.
