Argh. Their reply doesn’t really sound optimistic. I feel like, had they already sent out all of the decisions, the message would be more…I don’t know, definite?

I’m just hoping I hear by the 19th of May. I’m going to the east coast to visit schools then, and I don’t really want to visit Barnard if I’m going to get rejected, you know?

Has anyone else visited the campus? I’ve never been, but I’ve looked at a ton of photos, so I think that I know what it’ll look like. If you visited, did you like the campus?

I’ve been! I live in New York City, so I’ve been there a couple of times. One thing I have to say about the campus is that it’s rather small, but quaint, I suppose. There’s also the Columbia campus across the street, which I found to be nicer. More sprawling lawns, more impressive buildings, etc. The entire area is rather beautiful at night, however.

Some of the dorms are rather stark and not very pretty. Others are nice and have a beautiful view; I guess it depends on the luck of the draw. I did not like the facilities, such as the kitchen. What bugged me was that we were touring during the summer, and they did not even have enough sense to clean the kitchen - instead there were spills and used cups lying around (that might just have been a fluke, but it turned me off the college for a while).

I can’t remember anything more specific…I know I really liked the…Diana Center, I think it was? It’s this new building they recently finished up, and it was really lovely inside. It’s just, there’s really not much of the campus to remember. It’s one of the smallest college campuses I’ve ever seen; I don’t know where all the students fit!

As to their response on FB, they said, verbatim: “We are still aiming to get them to you mid-May” and the “still” makes it seem a little bit more optimistic? As in, you have nothing to worry about, nothing’s changed, there’s no delay that we are anticipating?

handgrenades: i think midnight firefly has a better explanation of it than i do. i’m just so… antsy now. all the best people. midnight firefly, is barnard your first choice?

barnardbarnard: Well, I’ve only applied to Barnard, but it was never my first choice. The first time around my first choice had been Vassar, but I got rejected and ended up going to Williams instead. However, I found I did not like Williams and quickly withdrew before the semester began and enrolled in a CUNY, but I knew I did not want to remain there. I also discovered that I had no desire to dorm at college, so I quickly began looking at my options for colleges I could commute to. Barnard came up. I know it sounds like it was my last resort, but that’s not true at all - in the past few months I’ve really fallen in love with the college, especially after my jaded first experience with Williams when I discovered what I really wanted in a college (not to say that Williams was a bad college - on the contrary, I could tell it was fantastic, but it just wasn’t for me).

if they sent mails by 15th, we still need to wait two or three days to get the mail… why it took so long…

vinniexinyu: They say we would receive it BY mid may, so… i’m still hoping for the best really. it’s just another day at the latest and seems like the only thing i can do. all the best!!

midnight firefly: i hope you really find what you’re looking for in barnard. i understand how frustrating it is to be in an environment that isn’t your element.

i realise that barnard often talks about “fit”. the stress that they look at your essays first before anything and they do generally take in lower stats than common for a school of their standard. but what exactly is the barnard “fit”?

it’s a bs clout in my opinion, the whole college process is, how can grades & an essay truly show how great a student is IT CANT thats why i feel most schools should have internviews but even that- the person given you the interview may not take to you… we are all people judging people life is all judgements. The admission committee is judging us, so screw that! I am so over it and if i get rejected whatever- I am too good for Barnard or any other school and I know that period. To think I was so upset senior year I am glad i’ve grown after those two years the whole thing is a joke. We as applicants are vulnerable and we waste app fees and we get nothing out of the relationship lol

ok done with my rant, I do love Barnard as a whole but we students make it what it is not the professors or the AC

just saying that I HOPE WE HEAR BY MONDAY and this ****ty processes is done with

(Yet again, this is ridiculously long. It started out as two sentences and basically turned into an inspirational speech. Maybe if I decide I don’t like my current major, I’ll just drop out of college and go around giving speeches like these, lol.)

ellomeno- I totally agree! College is absolutely, 100% what you make of it. I’ve been at a community college for the past year, and even though people always look at me sort of strangely when I say that I love it here, I really do. I’ve found teachers that I like, opportunities to take part in, and I’ve taken a hugely varied load of classes for pennies on the dollar. I took my last community college final yesterday, and even though I’m glad to be going on to bigger and better things, I will sort of miss it, haha. (Though I won’t miss my community college peers – two people in my English class wrote research papers on Charlie Sheen…)

Even if none of us end up at Barnard, I have no doubt that we’ll all have an excellent time somewhere. Every college has amazing professors, every college has cool people, and every college has neat opportunities. Yeah, Barnard is a top choice for most of us, and yeah, it would be awesome to go there. But, there’s a quote from a freshman thread that I absolutely fell in love with:

(And then, something I’ve been reminding myself a lot lately: college is only four years long, and most of us only have two or three years left. Three years is nothing – it’s the amount of time a lot of us spent in middle school. And then, after that, whether we’ve graduated from Barnard or from a state school, we all get to charge into our future.

If you read BWOG, the online version of Columbia’s Blue and White magazine, right now they’re posting these profiles of graduating seniors. And though everybody seemed to enjoy their time at Columbia or Barnard, they’re all really excited about their futures. And, maybe it’s just me, but I don’t want college to be where I peak in life.)

So, yeah, we all want to go to Barnard pretty badly, and yeah, I’d still like to hear soon and I have my fingers crossed that each and every one of us gets in. But, even if we don’t get in, I’m positive that we’ll all end up somewhere that we love. Even if we don’t find this “somewhere” at a college, even if we don’t find it in our first jobs or at grad school. I know it sounds cheesy, but I think we’re all going to end up “happily ever after” even if we all take different paths to get there.

(But still! When will those darn letters finally arrive, haha?)

midnight firefly - thank you for telling me about Barnard! That’s pretty much what I expected, but it’s nice to hear it confirmed by someone who actually has been.

@handgrenades wow i love and agree with everything you said COMPLETELY! It is true I am more eager about my career and I feel what makes us different- we know somewhat what we want, and we are GO getters we are ahead of the curve, we are strong women who will no matter where we end up not give up. We know the transfer rates are low yet we worked our asses off because we deserve nothing but the best.

What is your major? or intended major? and I am so glad I read what you wrote, have you at least heard back from any schools?

Hi everyone!

I’ve been following this thread for a while now and just wanted to say that I love what you wrote, handgrenade, that is totally how I feel too! I’m still really eager to hear from Barnard and I pretty much have a mini panic attack every time the mail comes and nothing is from Barnard. I just finished my freshman year of college, so I kind of feel like I’ve been doing college applications for a year and a half straight now…it’s exhausting! Anyway, what you said really made me realize that this is just the beginning, and even if I don’t get into Barnard, I (and ALL of us) will have learned a lot and be even more motivated to fight for what we want and deserve in life. Good luck to everyone, hopefully we’ll be hearing back soon!

Last year Barnard had 534 transfer applicants and they admitted 112. It is pretty low absolutely. I am eager to come back to this thread on Monday to see if admissions would arrive. Actually, my finals start tmr. I need to plunge myself in my finals and give Barnard time… good luck to everyone!

great point handgrenades, and love how you are picking up the morale, i would really love to receive a priority mail packet, i got a nice R letter from another school today a bit on the devastated side, however Barnard would make me feel a million times better.

I’ve been religiously following this thread for the last month, and completely agree with everything that’s been said. I recently read a quote by Lee Bolling, president of Columbia University, and it really spoke to me. “Dont let rejections control your life.* To allow other peoples assessment of you to determine your own self-assessment is a very big mistake.* The question really is, who* at the end of the day is going to make the determination about what your talents are, and what your interests are?* That has to be you.”

Regardless of whether any of us get in or not, we’ll be succesful wherever we end up. Good luck to all! And here’s to hoping we hear soon.

Ignore the asterisks. I have no idea why they showed up…?

it’s weird i applied to NYU April 1st and heard back last thursday and I applied to barnard in February and nothing lol and I know NYU get’s at least 6,000 transfer apps and barnard what 600? 800 most?

what gives!

hahaha~~ @ellomeno…I totally understood. I applied to Mount Holyoke March, and heard back only twenty days. I will call Barnard if I haven’t heard them by Tuesday.

officailly mid-May!!! Does anyone receive mails yet?

vinnie: still waiting on pins and needles. =/ I’m hoping that we get responses by Monday or Tuesday; perhaps Barnard sent them out yesterday or today.

AHHH i am sooo scared! Idk If I got rejected it will suck I will probably cry but I know i put everything into my app for Barnrad! andddd hope it goes well

all the best ladies hopefully some of us here by Monday- Wed and no later ;)
