Barnard vs. William & Mary (Joint Degree Program for IR)

Hello! As May 1st rapidly approaches, I find myself searching for advice anywhere and everywhere (hence, my first college confidential post!) Anyways, here’s my situation:

I was accepted regular decision to the College of William and Mary and St. Andrews Joint Degree Programme for International Relations. While it’s a mouthful, it basically means I study two years at both institutions. Normally, there are only 5 students per four subjects. So, it’s just an honor being accepted. In terms of pro’s for the program, I appreciate the opportunity to partake in both the liberal arts aspects of W&M and the more in-depth study of St.Andrews. The prospect of studying abroad for two years is scary only in the best way. On another note, I didn’t qualify for much financial aid from W&M (in the sense I would still need to pay a lot…)

Now, for the polar extreme: Barnard College. It’s NYC and the idea makes me smile (a lot). When I visited last weekend, the classes were small and personal, the faculty spectacular, and the opportunities presented (internships, research, etc.) endless. Also, the anticipated “intense” relationship with Columbia student was all hype. On campus, I couldn’t tell one student from the other. Besides, I can genuinely say I loved Barnard as Barnard, not just its affiliation with Columbia. Also, while finances are tight Barnard was generous with financial aid.

It would cost around the same to attend both schools, which makes the decision even more challenging.

I would deeply appreciate any thoughts or opinions. Thanks!

I imagine how tough it is, unfortunately the decision ultimately comes down to you. However- if it were me, these are factors I would consider:
-Internships/Research Opportunities- Seems like Barnard has more from what you wrote, having these types of things are extreme resume boosters
-Location- especially for International Relations (which is what I’m guessing you want to do), being in city is important in my opinion, and NYC is a great one for that
-Cost- however you said they were equal so I guess that doesn’t apply here
-Abroad Opportunities- clearly William and Mary takes this one, but does Barnard offer any at all, and if it does- does aid transfer? two years abroad is a lot, and would be too much for me, but it depends how you feel on that. I would be concerned about the missed opportunities back in the states, unless it truly is your goal to get a job abroad and live there.

If it were me (sorry for saying this a lot) I would choose Barnard- for it’s location and opportunities, especially if it offers you study abroad at all even if for a shorter amount of time.

However this is you- what it comes down to is what feels right- what could be home be for the next stage of your life.

Hope I helped!

So I’m still relatively undecided but leaning towards Barnard. I keep searching for that gut feeling everyone seems to find, or at least trying to let it come to me (if that’s even possible)! However, I just re-read your post and I find it was reassuring for what I want to study at Barnard. So thanks for posting!! @ptkid
