NYU/UCLA/George Washington/St. Andrews (Scotland)

Hi, everyone!

I am very conflicted and would like even more opinions on my decision.
I had another post but now I've narrowed down my list to NYU, UCLA, GW, and St. Andrews, so I would like to hear more opinions.

I am looking to major in International Relations and Econ.

Please post some opinions. Also, cost is not a problem.

Thanks!

Can you supply a bit more info: where do you see yourself if you’re from the US or even if you’re an In’tl, and how does geography relate to your happiness in college selection? And, of course, did you visit and gain a feel for the four?

Hi, drax12
I have been living in the US for the past 7 years so maybe a change would be good. I visited all of them except for NYU which I will be seeing this weekend. I really did enjoy St. Andrews even though it’s in a small town, which I usually don’t like. I’m almost checking off UCLA because it’s too big.
Thoughts?

No, I don’t have a lot of thoughts, except that maybe NYU might be too large for you also. It’s apparent that you like large towns/cities but not too large a u. GW, with your major and it being in DC, might be the best for you? Also, there was someone on this msg board with whom I spoke, who seemed to be enamored of U of St Andrews, and swore by its philosophy dept. Maybe if he still frequents these boards, he might show up.

All great options! Congrats OP.
GW and NYU are very intermixed throughout the city which I hear (don’t know from experience) is in contrast to St. Andrews.
I think it would be beneficial for you to consider your future plans
You did say you are studying IR which GW does great, but St. Andrews has a fantastic program as well.
If you want to work outside the US I would do St. Andrews, because it has a lot of pull internationally. Or if you love NYC maybe NYU.
I think it really depends on what type of environment you are looking for and what you plan to do after college.

Thank you! Smitty4, I’m really glad to hear some positive opinions about St. Andrews as a lot of the time on here I feel like people are bashing it. I think I am leaning more towards St. A’s because of its international reputation and proximity to amazing opportunities in Europe.

Hi Pickingaschool - Have you already been accepted to the universities? Will you be a freshman this coming fall?
St. Andrews has a wonderful reputation for IR plus since you’ve visited I’m sure you know that it has a very international community. Plus the university has very high student satisfaction. As drax12 said if you found UCLA too large then you will probably feel the same about NYU but of course the cities and campuses will have totally different feels so perhaps you will like it. My only comment about GW is that it is a great school in what seems to be the most obvious place to study IR but I do recall their college recruiter making it clear that internships at the Capital/White House etc. are basically impossible to get. Just an fyi.
Of course any of the universities listed would be exceptional schools to attend. Best of Luck!
