Barrett EA Decisions for Fall 2020 Admission

Hey, I have applied to Barrett Honors College at ASU and I was wondering if anyone knew when they release their decisions? Is it all at once on a specific date for Early Action? I am guessing mid December but I was curious if anyone had already received their decision. Reply if you have an idea or are also curious, or even if you are interested in applying to Barrett! Thanks!

I’m pretty sure decisions are released on December 20th for EA Barrett!

@BrooklynDav

December 20th indeed. See https://barretthonors.asu.edu/admissions/first-year-students

(unless you qualify for expedited review in which case it could be earlier)

Wow, that’s new. In the past, ASU had rolling admissions and rolling Barrett decisions. They have grown in popularity, so makes sense.

There is a thread for last year’s EA decisions and some of those applicants received decisions as early as 12/9/2018.

My daughter was admitted a week or two ago. She is one of the National Scholars though and that might mean it’s expedited.

Just got notified. Got in to Barrett - BS Computer Science.

Same for my son. Software Engineering. So does anyone know if there are additional scholarships for Barrett or just what came from admissions? If its just the standard $15,500 for out of state that is not that competitive.

@gohawks1: I have not seen any additional money yet… Standard $15,500 thus far.

DD just got in. OOS. Business Data Analytics. So far she has only received $15,500 from admissions.

I got put on the wait list. Does anyone know how that works or what the chances are to get admitted?

@gohawks1 - there are other Barrett specific scholarships. If your student has any National Merit status, that could help. You could also have your student contact the Barrett recruiting department. They might have some ideas. The roughly $28k remaining COA can be steep. Does your student plan on taking the Federal loans available? Is your EFC below that? If so, you might be able to get more aid based on that.

@usma87 - Thanks for the response. We are not planning on taking loans and our EFC is above that COA. Basically the only aid we’ll get is merit and we’ll cover the balance from 529’s. I think I calculated it wrong initially because the COA is roughly $35K now. We’re out of state (IL), so the sticker price is around $50K. WIth a COA of $35K that puts us in line with in state U of I, a few thousand less than Purdue. And more expensive than Michigan State, Iowa State, Nebraska and U of A. My son is going to be in Engineering wherever he ends up.

Oh yeah. Left out that my son is not a National Merit Finalist. He got a 1540 on the SAT, but just didn’t score as well on the PSAT, so didn’t qualify for that.

@gohawks1 - we also received the standard $15,500. Same situation, not National Merit so didn’t get additional scholarship. His stat was good enough for getting $30,000 from U Arizona, but DS20 seems to like Barrett/Tempe better. Will tour both schools and decide.

@2015vintagemars - Definitely visit both. You can do a long weekend and hit both schools easily. We did that a year ago over spring break. My son liked ASU better and Barrett was probably the reason. As I mentioned before without additional scholarship $ I can’t see choosing ASU over Purdue or some of the other schools mentioned. They have dropped down my sons list.
My guess is the popularity with Barrett has driven down the need for them to offer lots of merit aid to attract top students. At the end of the day money has to come into the equation.

@gohawks1 - very well said. I also can’t justify going to Purdue OOS without scholarship, especially for engineering. Still waiting to hear from more schools in March but Barrett is on top of our list. Did you have information on choosing Barrett dorm rooms? I am hesitant to put down a deposit this early but want to make sure DS20 is with other engineering students if he chooses to attend ASU/Barrett.

@2015vintagemars If you want a specific type of room in Barrett (especially a private room) you might want to put a deposit early. If you do not care about the type of room, you can wait a little and still should be able to get a spot in the Cereus Hall which is the one used by most engineering students.

The types of rooms available are listed under “Barrett Complex” at:
https://housing.asu.edu/housing-resources/housing-rates-and-costs#tempecampus

Floor plans are at:

And the list of halls within Barrett is available at:

@NJEngineerDad - wow! Thanks so much for the detailed info. Will check out the floor plans. I think DS20 would like to have a private room. Would you recommend a duplex (2 bedroom sharing one bath), or a private room in a 3- or 4-room suite? DS20 would like to socialize but also prefers reading or listening music with headphone on for his downtime. So he would prefer roommates who are quiet and more studious.

I don’t have insight as to which private room would be best. Last year we did not send a deposit until our son decided to go to ASU (around April 1st) and by then the only available rooms were the shared ones…
