Barrons SAT 2400

I've been working through some of the practice CR questions in this book and i think its completely ridiculous. There are at least 2 questions for every CR passage that contains an explanation that make no sense whatsoever. I was reading this passage about a pirate on a boat, and in the passage, there was a sentence that describes his clothes as a "shade" too tight. because he was fat. So the answer choices were Hue, tint, shadow, thread, and hair.

I chose thread because it makes the most logical sense out of the 5. A thread too tight can be both figurative and literal. Barrons is telling me that the answer is hair because hair means small in a figurative sense. What?! barrons proceeds to tell me that although thread does indeed fit, and relates to clothing, it does not work. what? thats it? There is also another question that only gave me the explanation for 3 choices, outright stating their wrong, and giving me the correct choice. However, they failed to explain the last choice, which seem to be a perfectly fine answer to the question.

Does anyone else use the barrons 2400? if so, tell me what you think about their CR passage questions.

i want my money back.

Barrons 2400 is messed up with some questions, have you read the passage about all the women living in one city with no men?? The answer is right there but Barrons contradicts it!

Im glad i'm not the only one that notices the flaws in their "perfect score book" .

Yeah, I think some of the questions are quite ridiculous. I just finished Chapter 2 today and am starting Chapter 3, the one about long passages.

The questions are, to be repetitive, ridiculously hard. I think I missed practically half of the sentence completion questions in the first chapter.

Apart from being ridiculous hard, how are the math questions? I'm thinking of buying it.

Its a great book if YOU DONT MIND BEING RIPPED OFF.
Actually the CR questions are tough to the point where you have to abandon logic to understand their reasoning, or whatever it is they give. I haven't looked into the math yet, it shouldn't be too hard.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with you about abandoning logic. Some of them are simply outrageous.

I'm actually a bit afraid that studying from that book may be detrimental to my score, since it's so totally different from actual SAT questions. What do you think, quix?

The math section is too easy. I don't get why they call it hard. Then again, I'm gifted in math. I usually finish a math section in a little over half the allocated time and get all the questions right.

But you guys, that's how you achieve a 2400 - by following overly convoluted logic and contradictory solutions!!!

Then again, there is the magic formula of shading in all bubbles...woops, that was a secret.

^ I hope nobody took the above, seriously, lest another poster be upset at the lack of my empathy.

Barron 2400 is indeed pretty crappy. It's just too different from the real thing.

In all seriousness, i think the CR passages are great practice. Its definitely slightly harder than the actual SAT questions but thats just going to over-prepare you, which is what barrons books tend to do. Sometimes.

Whether it would be detrimental to your actual score, i don't know. I think the best thing to do as of now is to work through these questions, and then go back to the blue book to get a sense of how they're different and whether that difference is for better or worst.

Haha. Or we can not study at all, and get a quick 2400 by bubbling in all the answer choices.

Yup 2400 is REAL HARD
All the sections are messed up and i would recommend their how to prepare for the SAT version (I own both)
But i think it will help me in the end when i need top level practice, so right now its just in the cupboard. I HATED that pirate parah and the answers were sad

My 2 cents..

I think Barron's 2400 (CR) is more like "THE" hardest question on a given actual SAT. I think we've all had the same frustrations - having to abandon all logic to understand the question - on perhaps the last or last two questions on a CR section.

Same problems here

^ If Barron 2400 stresses nothing except THE HARDEST QUESTIONS then it would be somewhat useless. You need to realize all the concepts, not just the " hardest questions concepts"

Actually, I've heard the phrase, "a hair too tight" before. I've never heard of anything being a thread too tight.

They are right, but their explanation sucks.

Haha, I just came across the "shade too tight" question three days ago. And, even though I read this thread, I still picked "thread too tight." Because it makes sense when you're talking about clothing. And while shade can figuratively mean a "bit," they throw you off and make you think of the primary meaning of shade by including hue in one of the other answer choices.

I think I am crazy or stupid while taking practice tests of Barron's books; Now I feel relief that I am not the only one having troubles with Barron's. Happy to join the Barron's frustration group.
