Bars?

How many bars are there in Westwood? and do UCLA students actually go to them? is there a lot to do on weekends (parties, bars, etc)? I'm considering UCLA next year but worry that it wont be as big of a party school as i'm looking for.

Yes there are plenty of bars, and students do go. But... it doesn't matter until you're 21 anyways (I'm assuming undergrad?) There will always be something to do if you look for it.

How many bars in Westwood? In my opinion -- not enough!

Don't know if you mean pure unadulterated bars (primary purpose, bar/pub) or bars/restaurants or restaurants with bars.

All said, about 1 or 2 per block. They differ in socio-economic situation and age.

For the college crowd: Westwood Brewing Company (don't just stick to the ground floor, go upstairs on weekends); BJ's that includes a micro-brewery, always a line to get in; Maloneys (now called O'Hara's), typical sports bar; Acapulco -- this place goes through phases of hot and not, but has been there forever; Gypsy Cafe and Habibi Cafe -- both on Broxton -- dunno if they have drinks, but they have the hookah scene, and since I FINALLY quit smoking (praise allah!), I avoid these places like the plague because they look SO GOOD and I know I'd start again!

For the cool and upwardly mobile: Palamino -- serious chick hangout for those long discussions about which guy messed them up and fabulous frou-frou drinks -- pomigranate martini to die for and a pretty nice appetizer selection; Napa Valley Grille -- decent yuppie scene with surprisingly good food; nine thirty -- too trendy for me and way overpriced.

Old folks: Gardens on Glendon. Actually the food and drink are really good, and this place was formerly part of the Hamburger Hamlet chain. Now predominately overtaken by the early-bird blue hair crowd.

The only true bars in Westwood are Maloney's/O'hara's and Brewco. Both are mediocire at best, and are always overcrowded (2 bars walking distance for 40k students.. well, what do you expect)

You can drink at all the places Ari mentioned but they arent really a bar scene.

A lot of UCLA students go to bars in brentwood and santa monica too. MUCH better selection and variety there.
