Perhaps but its an issue if firms like GS don’t even show an interest in recruiting :(

Yeah… My plan with Baruch is still going to be a back up. If I don’t get accepted to any of my top choices I’ll try to go for Baruch Honors.

You applying this year?

First of all, I don’t think that any colleges would talk bad about themselves. In this case, this article was based on some of the students’ opinions or something else. This article was about IB, and as you know, IBanks mostly recruit from top schools only. As I said, Goldman Sachs recruit at Baruch, but probably not to their IB department. We were talking about the finance program at Baruch, not about how easy it is to get into IBanking from Baruch.

If your goal is IB, then you should definitely go to NYU, Columbia, or Cornell only.

Euroazn, what do you think about JPMorgan Chase? This bank is a second bank in the U.S., which heavily hires students from Baruch, NYU and Pace, and is more prestigious than GS.

To Euroazn: No, I’m only a sophomore.

JPMorgan is a great bank (although I won’t go as far as to say it’s more prestigious than GS). Still, that sentence stated “companies like GS,” of which JPMOrgan is part of. I’m just keeping a skeptical eye, for obvious reasons. This is a major decision in my life!

I’m not saying Baruch is a bad school at all. For someone in New York, it is practically stupid not to go there unless you’re going to a tier 1.

As a maryland resident, this will cost about the same as UMDCP, which I feel certainly isn’t worse.

Now, I am considering a future career as a quant so it is quite imperitive to have a good math/compsci department at your disposal. I am not sure that Baruch has this (at the undergrad level - MFE is pretty damn awsome.)

So that’s why for me, unless I get in Macaulay Honors, it is quite unlikely that I choose baruch over UMCP - which is a practical shoo-in for me.

And JeremyS - Good luck, your hardest year in high school is about to begin :)

Baruch college is a tier 1. lol

Why don’t you ask Taxguy about a school, since you live in the same city?

Euroazn, I also have a question to you: Do people know about Baruch in your city/school, and what is their perception?

Nope, nobody has even heard of it (and hence it is not a tier one school - lets get real here,Baruch is not Wharton.) The only reason I heard about it was because I was doing some research on MFE’s. As for taxguy, I asked him if he could send me a PM with some contact info but so far nothing :(

At least you’ll be happy to know that I’m liking it a lot more than UMCP, my state school.

Hey Euroazn, you can always PM me, and I usually respond to my PMs. Just click on my user name and send me a private message.

However, although I attended Baruch, it was 35 years ago! My knowledge might be a bit archaic.

Taxguy,

If it is not a secret, can you tell us what did you do after Baruch? I mean did you pursue a masters degree? And how was the transition from one state to another? I remember you said somewhere that Baruch college has a huge alumni, so does it mean that Baruch has a recognition in other states? And, do you have a CPA only, or other designations too? I’m sorry if I am so curious :).

Hahahahaha nice try at indirect advertising with the whole alumni network thing. And tax guy, thanks, posted a visitors message.

^lol…It is not an advertising. I have been accepted to Baruch and NYU myself, but I think that I will go to Baruch.

You still haven’t decided? How does that work ???

Uh Toshtemirov, you should probably do something about that like RIGHT NOW.

Lol IKR? Classes start in like 2 weeks. It makes me think he’s just a liar.

Firts of all, right now I have one more semester at a community college to complete my associates degree, but I already received acceptance letters since I applied earlier. I will transfer to Baruch for the Spring 2011, and the classes will start at January 28th. The reason why I decided to apply earlier was that I wanted to transfer without graduating from a community college, but then I changed my mind, since I have only one semester left. I already have been in Baruch, I took a campus tour and I liked it. However, I want to visit them again, for last time I didn’t ask them about their Honors program, and if it is possible, I might even switch.

Euroazn, don’t call me a liar if you don’t know anything about me or my situation.

I have never outright called you a liar. Read my posts more carefully, please.
Merely, many things you say are suspicious, and give ample reason for me to suppose that you could be a liar.

Response: You should know what I did during college too. I worked during two summers for a bond trading firm on wall street, which I really didn’t like due to the pressure.

I also tutored kids as a Beta Alpha Psi tutor, where my fees were paid by the college. I also interned at an accounting firm for a summer.

After school, I went to law school and interned at a law firm during one summer. I actually passed the CPA while I was in law school, but I have no idea how I was able to accomplish that. I then went to work for the IRS for four years until I resigned to start my own lecturing and tax writing business.

As I noted, Baruch has a huge alumni base. I was in Miami, Florida and attended meetings with the alumni assocation, which were well attended.

Euroazn, for some reason, I can’t send a private message. Thus, here is what I would have said to you:

I can give you some info, Euroazn, but my knowledge is probably a bit dated.

Baruch had fine facilities. However, at the time, facilities meant a good library and nice classrooms. PC computers didn’t exist. Grad school placement was very good for those with good grades. I personally knew folks that went to grad school in many top places such as Columbia, NYU, Harvard etc.

It was much better than a community college, although I really like Montogmery College. I was a professor at MC and thought that it was a very good school.

Although there was no campus per se, you had Manhattan as your campus, I would commute via the long Island Rail Road each day and eat lunch and breakfast in different restaurants in Manhattan. NY is a FABULOUS place for a student if you don’t get overwhelmed by everything going on. NY also has lots of businesses for connections. I can assure you that every accouting firm and financial firm heard of Baruch in NY. The key to getting a good financial job from Baruch is to get very good grades ( 3.5+) and get internships in as many summers as possible. You should also join the alumni association for contacts too.
