Basement triple in Bostwick..... YIKES

My son was assigned a basement triple in Bostwick. I have heard “Cave” and mold batted around as descriptions. He seems just fine with his assignment but I’m just being a mom at the moment. He’s social and I’m not worried about that aspect. More the idea of a triple and cramming all that furniture and stuff into a room. I have heard they are “oversized” but would love to see a picture. At least the laundry is nearby. I have scoured the web to try to get info. (my son would find me insane ) Anyone have any info? Thanks ~ from the embarrassing mother

Freshman year in college, 1963. It was not Wake Forest. I’d lived in boarding school for four years prior when my roommates mother arrived with new matching bedspreads and curtains. Of course she assumed I would like them and re-made my bed with her new cover. It was her son’s first time away from home. To me it was a cultural shock as I thought of us as grownups who could handle these matters by ourselves.

The good news: her son went on to becomes head of research for Hughes Aircraft by our tenth reunion.

Don’t worry mom, it will be OK. Wake Forest is a serious university with lots of endowment. I’m sure it will not result in a health situation.

? I’m not worried about his health? As I said, he is a well adjusted, very social kid. I was hoping to get feedback from someone who was in that dorm and would recommend bunking/lofting in a triple so I can plan ahead. We live a plane ride away and so prior knowledge is just helpful. My son is not a bedspread kid. He’s bringing sheets and doesn’t even use a top sheet. This isn’t about fear at all. It’s about planning.

@suzannemcc Sorry to chime in so late, but I am a former Bostwick basement resident and current Wake student. I totally understand the concerns you have for your son; I had the very same concerns about the mold, being on the ground floor, and the small rooms! To sum it up in a few words: Bostwick is not the most luxurious freshman dorm, but it is not nearly as bad as everyone thinks. The way that Bostwick is set up with so many lounges and public spaces fosters community building in ways that many of the other dorms do not. To touch on some of the concerns, though… Mold does spring up occasionally, but when it does, the facilities team is very aggressive in targeting it and removing it. Half of the A Wing of Bostwick basement is undergound, hence “the cave.” Your son’s room is underground, but it has a few sunken windows that let in some natural light during the day. With that said, your son’s room is going to be very large. The triples are roughly 1.5-2 times the size of a standard double. Residents are free to bunk the beds if they choose, but virtually nobody does that. Even in the smallest of rooms, most people leave the beds un-bunked.

I hope this helps, and if you have any specific questions about anything or would like some pictures of Bostwick, please feel free to message me.

Welcome to the Wake community, and best of luck to you and your son!
