Hi…

The Honors College - Interim Dean: Dr. Shane Sharpe

There are actually 4 honors programs at Bama.

There are also honors courses within majors.

We have a thread that gives a lot of info about the Honors College. Here’s the link…
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-alabama/804961-honors-colleges-4-different-programs-app-process.html

thanks- once you are in honors program do you only take "honors’ classes- a freind said her son takes 2 per semester

Your friend is probably referring to the University Honors Program (UHP) where one needs 18 credit hours of honors courses, 6 of them being University Honors classes, to graduate from the program (this is the main requirement). Honors classes generally fulfill core curriculum or sometimes even major/minor requirements. You don’t take all honors classes, generally only 1 or 2 a semester. Cliche as it sounds, honors does not mean harder classes, but rather different work and a smaller class size. Honors at UA is more than just classes, fancy dorms, priority registration, and an extra tassel at graduation. It is more a way to get even more out of campus, mature intellectually, and help both the local community and the world as a whole during and after one’s time at UA.

Probably so- I don’t understand all the HYPE about the program- just trying to figure it out-it seems like the higher up Honors programs are great -not that the UHP isn’t but so many can get in the UHP program I would think- how many are admitted to the UHP?

The University Honors program includes about 20 percent of all Alabama students. The criteria for the 2010-11 school year is the following from the Honors College website:

Incoming students with a 28 ACT or 1250 SAT will be automatically accepted to the Honors College upon submission of their application to the Honors College. Students will be notified of their acceptance via mail.

Current UA students with a 3.3 GPA or transfer students with a 3.3 GPA will be accepted into the UHP upon submission of their applications. Students will be notified of their acceptance via email.

Current UA students with a 3.3 GPA or transfer students with a 3.3 GPA will be accepted into the IHP upon submission of their applications. Students will be notified of their acceptance via email.

Does anyone know if it is too late to apply to the honors college for this fall? I just found out that my D has a friend who was accepted and just finalized his decision to go to Bama, but he did not fill out the honors application.
I don’t know his stats other than ACT over 30 and he is a math wiz. I think he is leaning towards an engineering major.
He’s a great kid and I just hate that he will miss out on all the honors college has to offer. Can a student apply for sophomore year if it is too late for fall?

I’m encouraging him to call the honors college today!

Okay, I just followed the link M2ck posted above and found out that a student can apply 2nd year if he makes the grade. Good to know…

Yes, he can apply for the honors program, as well as international honors.

Timeflew…

If this student has an ACT 30 and is thinking of engineering, I hope he listed engineering as his major. He would get more scholarship money that way. If he didn’t, he can go into mybama and change his major. I think it can be found in the left column either in the Student tab or Academics tab.

Even if he’s not sure of the area of engineering, he can be undeclared engineering. He can also be computer science.

Yes, he can apply to honors. The app can be found in mybama, too. Also in the left column - either in Academic or Student tabs.
