Basic question on ACT vs. SAT

I plan on taking both the SAT and ACT but do colleges prefer one over the other? The reason I ask this is because I score tremendously better on the ACT vs. the SAT. ACT: Comp: 31, Math: 34, English: 31, Reading: 29. On the SAT I got a total of 1750, Math: 620, Critical Reading: 610. If I take only the ACT next year, (I'm only a sophmore) would colleges look down upon that? Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks

****Sorry about the repost, I just saw my exact question posted a couple of weeks ago....

It really depends on the school. Some have a preferance for one or the other. Others take either. So check into the schools you are interested in. If they take the ACT they are not going to care that you don't take the SAT.

If they take both, which most do, they don't care which test you take. They weight them equally.

make sure you don't apply to little elite schools like Harvey Mudd. Cause they don't accept ACT scores. But if you're applying to most schools in general (top 50 universities), they accept both. And no, they don't have a preference. I got a 31 (well long story, but 31) and 1840 on my SAT.

Harvey Mudd, as far as I know, is the only college left that won't accept ACT scores. If there are others, they are extremely rare.

yeah, I think Harvey Mudd is about the only one.
you should be fine with just the ACT most places. and if they need your SAT scores they can ask, and you can send them.

Be cautious, however, if you sending ACT scores in a pre-dominantly SAT area then colleges may start to wonder. In your case, def. go with ACT because the difference is so drastic.

skp21- i think he should be careful about the location that he is living in. I don't think a pre-dminantly SAT area college would wonder, but an applicant taking ACT in his pre-dominantly SAT taking state might. Because from what you're saying all the kids form IL, OK, and pretty much the mid west would cause the Ivies to wonder.

Oklahoma is very much an ACT taking State - so the Ivies would not wonder at all.

cornell accepts ACT
yale accepts ACT also (if you send the SAT, you also have to send 3 SAT II scores)

all of the ivies accept ACT, as well as the other schools. dont be discouraged if they schools say that they "prefer" the SATs. schools still dont know how to handle the SAT scores. my SAT scores were at least 300 points lower than my ACT score (converted to SAT)

p.s. why are you worrying about colleges as a sophomore? enjoy your last year of freedom

i dunno though, an advice i can give to the younger generation is to prepare earlier. Start ACT prep as a freshman. Get the essays done around junior year (the common app). Start taking ACT around Feb of your junior year, and be done around June. You'll have so much more time to have fun as a senior.

^^umm...i dont agree.

any standardized tests should be worried about starting the summer AFTER your sophomore year.
junior year=test prep/taking
summer AFTER junior year=college apps./any other last minute test prep

the only thing i do agree with your advice is to take the ACT early in the year, before the SATs.

well for asians who just moved to this country (me), yes.
