Basic Transfer Questions

I’m totally new to this whole process, and was wondering if people could clarify a few questions.

Do UCLA and Cal accept winter transfers? The transfer guide from the UCs is vague about this topic.

If you apply as a fall transfer, but are at a school on the quarter system, do you have to have all 90 quarter units at the time you submit you application or do you just list the courses you expect to take in winter/spring quarters on the app?

I am a high school student graduating this spring with close to 40 college units already. A few people have suggested I could enter my college with soph standing, and essentially apply as a transfer this fall, but I am not sure about this mainly because of concerns about when you need to have all the units completed.

UCLA only accepts certain majors (like engineering) and Cal doesn’t at all. I would just suggest ruling both those options out and applying for fall.

You just need to finish the 90 quarter/60 semester units by the spring before you transfer.

Since you have 40 units already completed, it’ll be pretty easy for you to try to transfer this fall since you’d only need to take 20 units to count as a junior. But I’d suggest taking ~15 units per semester so that you can build up your GPA.

Semester units * 1.5 = Quarter units

Apply this fall and take 20+ units at CCC (That is only roughly 7 classes). Unless your gpa for the 40 college units sucks (I hope they aren’t just AP credits)

Make sure your classes follow IGETC

UCLA and Cal do not accept winter transfers for the most part (architecture majors at ucla i think can though)

Most of my credits are from APs, but I also have one cc class in there. I am actually planning to attend UCSB this fall, and trying to transfer from there. I forgot to specify that it is 40 quarter units i have, and not semester.

If i can still try and apply this fall as a transfer, my fall quarter would be in progress so would i just list those classes, as well as my classes for winter and spring quarters as well on the app?

Yeah, just make sure you have at least 90 by the end of the spring.

I would suggest taking CC classes during summer to boost up your unit count since it’s easier to take a heavier courseload there than at SB.

What major were you planning on doing? Because it’s incredibly difficult to do a 1 year transfer for high unit majors like biology, engineering etc that have 10+ pre-reqs.

yea, i was either thinking about taking classes at a cc or doing sb’s summer start program, but i may have missed the deadline for that. CC also may not work, as I will be out of the country for a good part of the summer, so I may just be out of luck.

Would you not recommend some sort of bio major becuz of the high unit count? I looked at UCLA’s transfer website which listed the prereqs, and they did look pretty steep. It was either bio, hopefully microbiology, or some sort of economics for me.

UCLA’s site also said that if you complete the G.Es at another UC, you are exempt from UCLAs, but would I be able to complete all my G.Es in one year at UCSB?
