Bassett

Another dorm info thread...there seems to be a complete lack of information about Bassett...anyone care to share some?

Also, is there somewhere to call to get a floor plan or other information?

Thanks :)

hey 2o_o7, I was in Bassett during my first year! It is usually where they put some of the guy's basketball players on the 1st floor. Other than that, pretty much like any of your typical main East halls (that is, no AC, room size ~200 sq ft.)

Yeh, not too much you really need to know before you get there. I am an RA who lived in Pegram for the last two years and will be in Basset next semester. (second semester but not first as I am going to be abroad) Basset has the same floorplan as Pegram and all the rooms are of fairly similar size. The third floor has sloped ceilings and it gets really hot up there at the beginning of the year. The RC lives on the first floor of Basset and the dorm is really far from the bus stop. If you have any specific questions (sorry don't know of any floorplans online) I would be happy to answer them but I may be slow to respond as I am currently studying in Australia.

I'll be at Bassett too. Is it typically for students who play sports or single gender dorm? What's a typical Bassett room e.g. how big is the closet (individual or shared), any chest drawer etc? It looks like Bassett the furthest away from everything else. How long is the walk to the nearest bus stop? Am I one of the lucky ones?

Bassett is very standard as far as main quad East dorms go (no suites, no AC). It's not a huge hang out dorm which can be good or bad depending on if you need to get work done or not. Overall I'm a fan. Speaking of being a fan, bring some fans. It'll be warm, especially on the top floor which is where I was.
Good things: Decent room size, relatively close to marketplace and Lily.
Bad: Far walk to bus stop. We're really just talkin a couple hundred yards here, but get used to seeing a bus when you walk out your door and having it leave in the 3 or so minutes it takes to walk all the way down the quad. Of course, if you like practicing your 200 meter dashes this should actually be a good thing for you.

What is the flooring like in Bassett?

I'm also on the top floor, and I heard that the ceilings were sloped...was this an issue?

You must be very particular about your rooms. The flooring is wood (of course you can lay down your own rug) and yes part of the rooms have slanted ceilings. Is it an "issue?" Uhh...I never felt threatened by head banging or anything if that's what you mean. It makes for prettier room geometry?

Expert tip: Literally stack your half-lofted beds on top of your desk furniture to make full lofts (but build bed railings so you don't roll of and fall 7 feet to the ground). Saves mucho space and looks sweet. Fellow frosh will be impressed I can guarantee.

Haha, ok. I'm not that particular, but I'm just excited and want details!

Thank you for the information and hot loft tip :)

How's the common room at Bassett? Does it have its own game room, TV room, study hall, etc? I'm at first floor.

Do we need to get mattress pad besides the standard twin xl bedding set?

The common room, ammenity-wise is a tad subpar, no plasma screens or anything that you'll find in...that one dorm. It has a ping-pong and pool table, although they've seen better days. Really, the common room is what you want to make of it, I personally never spent any time there but some groups of friends did. I had cable and a nice tv in my room though so there just never was much of a reason to go.

Mattress pads? I'm a pretty sound sleeper so I didn't need one. My roommate swears by his special "memory foam" pad though. Personally I think its one of those things where you'd never miss it if you never had one.

What's the size of a fan should I bring? I saw there's a small 7" table fan at the store. I'm not quite sure whether it has the power to cool at least one side of the room.
