*****Bates College Class of 2020 ED and RD Discussions*****

Let the discussion begin.

That’s likely already going on in the bates forum.

I don’t think so. Why don’t I see people’s replies. just one or two

Guys i’m so scared/excited for decisions! I’ve applied ED1!

I applied ED to Bates. I received an email that said that I will receive an admissions decision BY Dec. 20. Does this mean I could potentially hear from them earlier than the 20th? Or do all decisions go out on the same day? Thanks for any help! (btw, this is the only discussion for Bates 2020 currently).

@collegeSeeker, have you received your Bates User ID and PIN? They said they’ve sent mine, still haven’t received it though!

I received it last week, but I’m from Maine so the mail comes very quickly from Bates

Also from Maine but just got mine this weekend!

Best of luck to everyone! I really really hope I get in. Will we find out before the 20th?

Well, if a new Englander is getting his now, I guess it’s going to take a week more to get to Germany.

It’s almost December and I still haven’t gotten my pin and ID. I’m afraid it might arrive late and I won’t have much time to submit left over requirements like asking for my TOEFL requirement to be waived. Should I just call them and request for the pin? I’ve waited for my letter for up to three weeks now!!!

Oh. Just got my login creds now, through the phone though. Now that I checked, I don’t need any English whatnot!

If anyone wouldn’t mind sharing a few stats about themselves I would be interested. I’m curious what the applicant pool looks like this year. If not, totally cool.

Gosh. This forum is dead. Don’t tell me this is what the class of 2020 will be like?!

I saw there will be a new dorm complex for freshman opening in Fall 2016.

I’m so nervous, all my friends hear back from their schools 5 days before me! why must Bates do this to us

Does anyone know if we’ll hear back through our Application Status page or through the mail? I think its through the internet, but I’m not sure…

@Tunnergray, pls do you know exactly when we’ll get our decisions? @aanycdn, visit decision.bates.edu and all your questions will be answered.

I’m part of NHS, International Club, Pony Club, Yearbook Committee, Cross Country team, and tutor at the local elementary school. I’ve also held a job consistently throughout high school. I’ve participated in 2 different selective summer academic programs (an environmental science program and a Chinese immersion program). I saved money and spent two weeks in South Africa shadowing my aunt who works in public health and also attended a international HIV/AIDS conference. My teacher recommendations are good.

My essay is about growing up on a small organic goat farm.
I plan on studying Anthropology and going on to graduate school to work in international public health.
Interviewed and did an overnight at Bates, the interview was fine- not great, not bad

I’m DYING RIGHT NOW OMG. I have all my stuff sent in, Applied ED1 to the dream school, and waiting amidst finals for the 20th!

Let’s see, in terms of stats, I don’t feel like a really good applicant, but I don’t think i’m too bad either (very lengthy):

Draws: PARTICIPATED IN COLLEGE FLY-IN PROGRAMS. Male, Low-Income, First Gen Asian Student from Texas, has a learning disorder in the form of ADHD, is confirmed to speed-read (reads 2000+ Words per Minute).

Weighted GPA - 3.94 (out of 5.0)

Top Quarter (23/99) at an extremely competitive Magnet School in my city - had a minor GPA drop Junior year, but I can explain that.

My school is wholly dual credit and AP - we graduate with an associates degree in either Arts or Sciences at my local community colleges, so all my classes are either Dual Enrollment, Pre-AP, Honors, or AP - no regular classes at all.

I graduate with an Associates Degree in Science from the local community college in my city along with everything else when I graduate HS - not sure if it does anything to my chances or not…

SAT: Superscore

  • CR: 730

  • Writing: 550
  • Composite: 1940

The SAT average of my school is like 1430 (even if the GPA average is 3.5 and everyone #22 and higher at at a 4.0+ GPA), so I’m not sure if that helps or hinders me.

Not taking the ACT, but I’m doing ED, and I’m not sure if I should submit my SATs in my application, since Bates is test optional.

Interviews: Aced - all interviewers I had told me that they were amazed at how passionate I was, and I definitely talked to the admissions counselors and spoke to them about my interest (because BATES IS THE #1) during the fly-in, so I’m not sure if that helps.

Letters of Recs; Noticeable participation within school - I work with my teachers and help them, help other students with the college process, excel in classes, and haven’t gotten into any trouble, so I should hope that my recs are REALLY REALLY GOOD. I have one letter of Rec from the EMERGE Fellowship, two fantastic teacher recs (one from my English Teacher and one from my Chemistry Teacher), and my counselor rec is probably going to be good too because of my impact on the school.

Essay: Very strong - well-developed, talked about how research helped change my life, got me through a tough Sophomore and Junior Year (explaining my GPA Drop along with the actions I took to resolve it, so it’s NOT a downer essay), and how it helped me ‘overcome’ and harness my ADHD so my disability becomes an advantage, aligning my Common Application with my heavily research-based extracurriculars, and my future plans of becoming a college professor and researcher. I worked with it with my Program Manager, who got students last year into schools like Brandeis, Wesleyan, and Occidental (with the program itself getting students into top tier colleges) and she definitely said it was ready.
