I'm trying to save up money for college this fall, since I really don't want to be the typical 'poor college student' (partly because I hate ramen ;)). Where does most of YOUR money disappear to during the year, and what things do you find yourself doing to save some money?

most of my money in college is spent on either food or alcohol. after getting sick of dining hall food most people go out to chipotle or something once in a while, or order deliver (www.campusfood.com is your friend)

you also need to budget for all the alcohol you will be buying. i didnt and i was wondering where the hell all my money was going before i realized i was spending at least 10 dollars a week on it. had a hard time explaining that one to my parents, but im chalking it off to fast food and school supplies.

hahahahahaha....I actually was trying to plan for "beverage consumption" along with other expenses. Maybe i'll just go out when well drinks are 2 for 1!

alcohol should be a major part of your budget if you drink.

$10 a week on booze? That sounds a bit high. What kind of stuff are you buying, and in what sizes? Also, are you getting mooched off of (i.e., you're friends never seem to have their own alcohol, but they always seem to be drinking in your room?) If you buy crappy stuff in bulk, you can spend a lot less than $10 a week. 1.5L of vodka fo $9 or 30 beers for 9.50 or 5L of wine for $11 should last you way more than a week.

I mean, i guess it also depends on how much/often you drink, and what the parties on campus are like, how much (if at all) they charge to get in/get drinks.

....but besides alcohol, where do you find yourself spending money?

$10 a week is cheap...

My fraternity parties when I was a freshman were $5 a night (thus $15 a week minimum), and now for my little brother who joining my house the parties are typically $10.

When you finally go to the bars, 10 bucks won't last you a night even on dollar night (gotta tip) if you party like I did in undergrad.

Other than that a lot of my money went to food (my fraternity house only had meals during the weeks, so had to pay for food on the weekends). If you join a fraternity or sorority you need to budget for t-shirts and other stuff with your letters on it.

Alcohol and food, 100%.

a 30 pack for 9.50? thats ridiculous. where im from a 30 pack will cost you anywhere from 15 (for shi**y beers like beast) to about 20 (coors or miller). i guess prices vary according to your location.

but yeah, alcohol and food will make up about 90 percent of your expenses in college. if your into it, weed or ciggaretes get expensive too.

is it less expensive to drink beer or hard liquor?

i dislike beer, so i hope it is the latter, but i may have to get used to it

depends on what you get, you can buy really cheap liquor but it's gonna taste like ****, if that doesn't bother you then that will work. also, there is a lot of cheap wine that's pretty decent tasting. my friends and i also drink bottles of champagne for $2.99 each, and it really tastes pretty good

if you just want to get drunk fast, go for liqour. even if its cheap and tastes horrible, taking shots only lasts a few seconds and your set for the rest of the night.

i used to hate the taste of beer too, but trust me, with the amount you drink in college, it grows on you.

Buy as cheap as you can. I mean at the end of the night is it really going to matter? Saves mucho dinero in the long run.

Damn, it costs like $34 for a 40 of Bacardi in Canada. That would probaly last me about 2.5 parties. So basically I could easily spend $34 a week just on booze.

that's why i dont buy bacardi. anyways, i drink beer more than anything. i'll generally buy an 18 pack of natty (on a weekend night) for roughly $10 and that's usually gone by the end of the night after giving a few away so i spend about 90% of my money of alcohol, the rest on food

what about 40's, they're cheap and effective?

i dont really like beer and usually just stick to liquor (151, grey goose or absolut, la clandestine or trul 1792 if i need to be creative). the amount of money you spend is based on your priorities.

151 tastes like death. but i still drink it.

are freshman limited to what they can drink, because of hookups?
(considering i dont know anyone at my school, i.e. upperclassmen)

how did you guys get alcohol when you were freshman, if you didnt know anyone at ur school?

I am not in HS...But I never drink ****ty cheap stuff. Which means I go to fewer, but better parties :D
