Baylor Cost of Living? (and other q's about rice/baylor)

<a href="http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/grad/directory/dir-med/brief/glanc_04110_brief.php%5B/url%5D">http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/grad/directory/dir-med/brief/glanc_04110_brief.php</a>
The tuition and required fees are cheap, but why is room and board so EXPENSIVE?

Is it feasible to get off-campus housing? How much per year would that cost? Would somebody be at a disadvantage by not living on campus?

Also, the RICE/BAYLOR BA/MD program is 8 year and they suggest you study abroad rather than skip a year if you wish. Do you still pay tuition, required fees, and room and board for that year?

How much AP credit do you need to count as a year of undergrad? 30?

Will you have to take higher courses of the AP course you took for the Baylor med school to accept it even though Rice accepted it and they are affiliated?

If you do the RICE/BAYLOR BA/MD program, then are you locked into having to go to the BAYLOR med school or will they allow you to apply to other med schools? If you do apply to other schools, will they count that against you in anyway? It's not that Baylor is a bad med school (top 10) but I would still like to see if I would ahve an opportunity at the other great med schools.

Will the RICE/Baylor program give me a good chance at an ophtho. residency?

USN numbers are comically off. Baylor may have financial aid information. Go look for their student financial aid "budget".

Is their fin. aid good?

If I go to RICE/BAYLOR, then wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a house^^?

It's about 15 miles from Rice and BCM.

Hi Affruff,

Cost of living in Houston in general is way way below that in NY, NJ area. I graduated out of TX schools.

Houston has a huge number of rental apartments (with utilities paid) you could easily rent. The only draw back of Houston is its public transport......which is practically non existent.

If you live off-campus, then you would incur costs for the car, parking, gas etc.

I would suggest that you visit the place with your family and contact a local real estate agent to find rentals or housing that is specific to your needs.
You will have an incredibly huge selection to choose from even within a reasonable range compared to what you can find in NY/NJ area.

I live in the MD area, but thanks anyway.

Buying a residence in Texas permits you to apply for state residency one year later, while renting does not. This might lower your tuition.

Some answers to your questions, but not necessarily in the order you asked them. The order of the answers might not make sense -- this is my third try at answering -- two others are lost in bitland.

Check the tuition and fees on the Baylor website directly. Two reasons come to mind. First, Baylor has no dorms. There is an arrangement with Texas Medical Center for apartments; rents vary by apartment size; you can live anywhere you want at Baylor. Second, the academic calendar for med school isn't the same as an undergrad program. Example, the first year at BCM runs from the end of July to the end of June (11 months).

Acceptance into the Rice/Baylor is a two step process. First, you must get accepted to Rice under ED or ID, then apply to the Medical Scholars Program.

On-campus or off campus is irrelevant to chances. I think the residential college system at Rice has advantages to traditional dorm life. Others may disagree. Check out some of the Rice threads for opinions on the residential colleges.

Acceptance into the Rice/Baylor program isn't binding to Baylor -- you can take the MCATs and apply elsewhere. Check out the Rice/baylor FAQ page -- <a href="http://futureowls.rice.edu/futureowls/Rice_Baylor_FAQs.asp%5B/url%5D">http://futureowls.rice.edu/futureowls/Rice_Baylor_FAQs.asp</a></p>

Generally, 30 credits to an undergrad academic year.

If you do a time abroad with a Rice Exchange Program host, you pay tuition to Rice and R&B to the host program. For time abroad in an affiliated program, you pay tuition and fees to the host program.

Rice is a private university; tuition is the same for in state and OOS. As for Baylor, Texas has a list of criteria for residency for tuition purposes. As for buying your own place, that's a "consult a tax advisor" question. If you have a place in your name, your parents MIGHT not be able to claim you as a deduction, even though they are paying for it because you are a full time student with no real income. I REALLY don't know the answer to this. Get yourself into the program. Worry about Baylor tuition later.

Ophthalmology is a very competitive field for everyone.

Can I apply for RICE/Baylor but not Rice itself.

For example, I would only want to go to Rice if I got into this program.

It's not binding. Just apply.

Apply Interim Decision to Rice. If accepted, then apply to Medical Scholars Program. Decisions are made in April. If you aren't accepted into the program, then you still have time to accept another school.

Rice is a great school -- my son graduates in two weeks.
