Does anybody know if Boston College looks at unweighted or weighted GPA? My problem is that I have maintained a weighted 4.9-5.0 GPA and an unweighted 3.9-4.0 GPA during my whole high school career until now. I was stupid enough to take 5 AP classes, with one of those being Calculus AB. Due to a C in Calc AP, my unweighted dropped down to a 3.77 and my weighted is still a 4.9 just in time for midyear reports. However, I dropped from Calculus AB to Calculus Honors for second semester and I notified/emailed my application handler today. I am doing very well in Calculus Honors with a high A (they don’t know that because it’s not included in midyear reports). Does anyone know if admissions looks at weighted GPA? I am getting worried as the decision date gets closer (March 20th). My GPA is a very important factor in my application along with my essays and recommendations because my ACT is not exactly the best.
They look at whatever is on your transcript and review it in context with the high school’s Profile and your class rank. (Approx. 85% of all matriculants were in the top decile of their HS class.)
And it depends on which college that you are applying to. A C in Calc, for example, will be tough to overcome for someone applying to CSOM as a Finance major (which is math heavy). But a C for a prospective English major, might not be a big deal.
Good luck.
@bluebayou I actually did apply to CSOM for entrepreneurship. Hopefully this won’t be the deal breaker. Also, my school does not rank.
check out your HS profile. Even if your HS does not officially rank students, an AdCom can usually can get a pretty good estimate your rank from the Profile.
Heck, even many top students have a good idea on where they are, at least on a relative level. Does a 4.9 w get into a highly selective school like Harvard? Have ~4.9s gotten into BC in previous years? Does your school use Naviance?
@bluebayou yes a 4.9 has and my school does use Naviance. Do you think going from AP to Honors looks bad? It certainly beats going from Honors to regular (I have never taken a regular class in my life).
@ngiord99
AP Calc is a very important on a business school app. Especially finance. I think you should have remained in and worked with a tutor to get it up. Honors Calc is easier. 5 AP’s way too much at most schools. Hopefully they will take that into account.
