I plan on attending BC next year as bio major/pre health.

I am not preppy and I do not have a lot of money, however I was granted enough aid. I know BC is known for their rich prepsters, however I am hopeful I will be content with befriending the few who aren’t.

The only thing holding me back is the fact that everyone who talks about BC speaks of their cutthroat environment, especially for pre-meds.

I will not be at the top of the class, and I am afraid of being overwhelmed by the competitive environment.

This gets especially scary when I think about keeping up my GPA for med school. Would I be better off at Northeastern where I would be at the top of the class in the honors program?

Anyone else in the same boat? Opinions???

Thank you!

As a BC graduate who witnessed people going through the major, I can confirm for you that our pre-med major is tough and competitive. It is a great program, but is definitely not a cake walk. BC students in the program are great and study with one another, but they definitely all stress about how the test will be curved. So, if you can’t handle stress, I would advise not doing your program at BC.

There is no escaping the courses that are meant to weed out students that aren’t persistent. BC has more name recognition than NU, so that could benefit you in your application to medical school. Also, if BC is in fact more difficult than NU, medical schools admissions boards will take that into consideration when looking at your accolade of being at the top of your class. Either way, you need to seek out the groups meant for students pursuing science and health careers, like Women in Science and Engineering (there are a few others). You want to form a group of peers who are on a similar track and can be of support throughout this arduous journey. You can do it. Those who are cutthroat are counting on you to falter, discount yourself, and drop out. Don’t worry about them, concern yourself with what you want to accomplish and the rest will fall into place.
