Boston College Premed

Hi! I am a current senior and I am trying to decide where to go to prepare me for med school. I got into BC and plan to major in biology on the premed track. I go to a competitive high school and worked hard and was able to balance social/academic activities. I have been looking at other discussions and it seems that the BC premed track is pretty ruthless with their curves. I was also accepted into a few nescac schools that seem less intense based on what students say. I love BC and want to go there but I don’t want to be sabotaged with a low GPA when applying for med school. Any advice or experience to share would be greatly appreciated!!

It’s really hard to know. BC has an excellent prehealth advisory process and if you are supported the results are excellent.

It’s mostly imho about how classes are taught in college.

I have specific knowledge about BC and less about Nescac schools.

Maths, chem and bio classes are much more applied than AP classes. It’s much more about taking the concepts and applying them versus memorization. You don’t always have the linear connection to the classroom material to the examinations. It’s a bit hard to explain.

Also, bio, cell bio and orgo are not at the same pace or complexity you’ve experienced. It takes a lot of work and some people seem to have a easier time with it than others. IQ and testing ability are not necessarily going to explain why. The students who don’t like it or struggle are still remarkably bright and find their paths. Many get it and succeed.

I would guess it’s similar to the Nescac experience.

Don’t be daunted by the curve. It’s a popular goal for many and many find other areas they love and move on. Others persist and do well.

It will be about you on a very individual level and experience.

BC is an excellent school, and premed everywhere will be tough. Choose the school that you feel is the best fit for you.
