OK, I want to condense the answers to all your little worries and questions about class registration into one simple post. That's the hope, anyways.

Right, so everyone is complaining: "Why can't we register? When do we register? This isn't FAIR!"

Well shut it for a sec.

Class registration will NOT occur at orientation, deduced through simple searching. While it says to have classes planned out in your head before the orientation, the actual schedule says this:

9:30 - 12:00 p.m.
Academic Advising & Program Planning (Students)

You will be ADVISED and a sample program similar to the ones in the general catalogue will be prepared for you.

If you read nothing yet, read this:
YOU CAN REGISTER FOR CLASSES ON THE DATE GIVEN ON WEBREG ON THE UCI WEBSITE. NOT BEFORE THAT.

From what I understand, this ranges between September 6th to the 12th or so.

So if you're absolutely dying to know when you can sign up for your exciting Humanities Core Class, check WebReg for your specific date and time. It is, more than likely, random and has nothing to do with when you are registered for orientation.

Thanks to jas0n and Kadya for answering everyone at least a dozen times before this.

Anyway, I've read a few discrepancies about registration occuring on orientation. However, having touched the registration system for a year, I believe UCI is going to stick with the registration windows online.

Second, while there seems to be a lot of contradictory things online, I see no reason for them to change from their regular system of registration. So yeah. We agree.

I do have two questions about the reg. window
I thought I heard that reg. is based on how many units you have going into the year. First is that true? And second since ap scores are coming out and I did gain some credits from those, will my reg. window change?

goober7011, It is true that units help determine the registration window time. However, for the sake of ease, UCI makes it entirely random for freshman for the fall quarter. This answers your second question.

yeah, the ap credits will help you for registering for classes for every other quarter than this first one. Something I'm looking forward to with 10+ passing AP scores!

You sure? According to the Orientation page, it says this exactly:

"Students & Parents will be able to select one from the following workshops at each hour.
*Students will be assigned an hour to register for classes (without their parents) during this period. When students are not registering for classes, they may attend any of the workshops below."

I even called once and was told that you would sign up for classes during the orientation and they said "you will be taken to a computer lab to do so."

That could be a problem. Most orientations actually bring you to a computer lab to register. UCI has never said this on the orientation page before so registration may be during orientation. I went to SFSU orientation today with a friend and we spent forever in a computer lab while people registered for classes.

Well according to the FAQ on the site, it seems it takes place during orientation. Here's what it says:

Is Orientation optional?
No, orientation is not optional. All freshmen need to attend orientation in order to receive academic advising and register for their classes. However, orientation includes more then just academic advising and registration for classes. Campus tours, social activities and meeting current and new UCI students are all available at SPOP and MINI SPOP. You can attend SPOP or MINI SPOP with or without your parents/guardian ...whatever works for you!

Do I register for classes at SPOP?
Yes, freshmen register for classes at SPOP and Mini SPOP. Incoming transfer students register for classes after they receive academic advising.

Well, I checked other department websites and each one seems to say that freshmen will enroll in classes during orientation. I mean after all, why else would those dates full up so fast? I called UCI once and I was told freshmen register different from everyone else for the first time and was told this was during orientation when you are taken to a computer lab.

If it never happened any previous year, and they already have reserved webreg dates for everyone, I don't know why they would have registration. Not that it hurts. My friends going to Cal Poly Pomona already registered for all their classes.

Guess we'll just have to wait and see when the people from the first SPOP come back.

OK, dudes, all the information I have seems to point toward class registration occurring during orientation. First, there is the orientation website which lists registering on the schedule and the FAQ section, second, department websites also claim it takes place at that time, third, the 2007-2008 freshmen checklist (http://www.newstudents.uci.edu/NSCL07.pdf) points to this conclusion and not to mention the time I called only to be told freshmen register differently and in a comp lab. If UCI didn't want it to take place at orientation, why in the hell would they say so and why in the hell would those registration dates fill up so fast?! Just wait and see to be sure . . .

Welcome to UC Irvine!! Now that high school graduation is past, or nearly so, it's time to begin planning your next academic adventure. We're very excited that you've chosen to come to UCI and hope that you're already busy thinking about the many possibilities for fall classes. As you probably know, this summer Freshmen will be able to enroll in classes when they come to Summer Orientation (SPOP), so be sure you sign up to attend a SPOP and give some thought to the classes you'd like to elect before you arrive at orientation.

Right, that's been established. We'll just have to see, though.

My only quarrel is, why would UCI bother giving us registration windows in september on webreg if we already will be registered? Again, we'll have to wait until the first SPOP returns.

UCI is crazy like that, they have information posted on their website, but when you physically go to UCI, they will tell you something completely different.
