hi
Im a freshmen in highschool
im going through a complete depression/failing/declining state in my life.
I just cant seem to pull myself together. i was always a 4.0 student in middle school.
but not as i move up to high school. im barely passing my classes. i get c's and d's. Is there something really wrong with me?? i try 100000 times more than any kind in my whole school! (work-a-holic -_-^)

I sometimes think that my BRAIN is inflating to a peanut size figure...

i did have a lot of things in mind.. but!! this is soo uncalled for and CRAZY!!!

If you went from a 4.0 to C's and D's, there probably IS something wrong.

-Have you talked to your teachers?
-Are you doing your homework (and does it actually make it into the turn-in bin)?
-Do you study for tests? (This may seem obvious, but I spent a long time not studying and then being puzzled by poor test grades)
-Are you paying attention in class?

It could just be that you're having a rough adjustment to high school. Colleges understand that and will be more forgiving with freshman grades; some don't even look at them.

Don't think too hard. I had friend like that, and she had to make EVERY SINGLE THING so difficult, it basically tore her apart. (At lunch, she asked me if I new the temperature of her french fry in Celsius. o_O)

Maybe your case is not as serious. But for some people, it takes time to adjust to the high-school atmosphere. Also, maybe you've over-loaded yourself.

Keep things simple, you're still only a freshman. There's still plenty of time.

maybe it's a matter of stress, or like lionswim said, a rough adjustment to high school. don't put too much pressure on yourself to succeed. just enjoy your time in high school, and for someone as smart as you, the academic success will come naturally. and keep in mind that high school is not all about academics.

Stop working harder, work smarter. Perhaps you're spending this on stuff you don't need to-overloading your absorption quota for the day without actually learning what you need to.

Perhaps working less might actually help you. If you're overstressed it all goes over your head.

Perhaps what is on your mind is also affecting you more than you think.

I think you should talk to your parents and guidance counselor about the possibility of being tested for a learning disability. My cousin was in middle school when she started having problems and wasn't diagnosed until high school.

Hm, actually, I wish I would have mentioned this in my first reply.

Are you identified as "gifted" by your school?

For those who are gifted AND learning disabled (or have ADD), one usually overshadows the other in elementary and middle school. Many cases are only noticed around high school, when the teaching style changes. That's what happened to me.

I'm not going to say you HAVE a learning disability or ADD, but you should look into it if you're CONVINCED there is no other problem.

Cutiebear, As a paent i would have to ask if anything on the homefront has changed? additionally, the transition can sometimes take some adjusting. You may be going from a smaller school to a larger school that may seem a strange and intimidating. Your grade drop seems rather drastic. Are you in a boarding school by any chance?

no.. it's just a public school, by our middle school
but i was getting ready for prep school next year. and i kinda prepared everything on my own, cuz my parents werent around while i was preparing for the admission prrocess.. maybe thats the case??;;;

Word of advice -
Fix it QUICK. Seriously.
I was a 4.0 student all through elementary/jr. high. I my first B's and my first C on an exam in math and ended the year with a 3.7 GPA. Then I had severe double depression or whatever and actually at one point of my sophmore year had a 2.4 GPA - I completely ruined myself, endning the year with a 2.7. Now, no matter what I do, I can't get my GPA up higher than a 3.3-.4 for by the time I get to apply to colleges in the fall. Trust me - I'm not going to be going anywhere I would like to go with that.
The lesson of the story - talk to your parents, teachers, counslers, dr's, whatever it takes so you don't really put yourself in the hole. You'll be kicking yourself for it and there will be nothing you can do over it. Good luck.

Cutiebear,
See a doctor. You could be having concentration and fatigue problems related to depression or another medical problem. Make sure that you tell the doctor about your grade problems.

If the doctor doesn't find a medical problem, get an assessment by a psychologist who specializes in treating adolescents who may have study skills organizational problems or learning disabilities. It's possible that you only need help learning how to study the more difficult material you're encountering in high school. It's also possible that you have something like ADHD or learning disability that you were able to compensate for earlier because the work was less difficult.

If your parents won't act on getting you help, talk to your Guidance Counselor and enlist that person's support. Do not wait on this. The longer you delay getting help, the harder it will be to bring up your grades.

Did they have ADD in the 1700-1800's (or even before that) and just not know what it was or is it caused by the bad environmental conditions (air pollution and stuff) we have now? I mean like if a woman is pregnant and breaths in air pollution or something (not her fault of course) can that cause these problems?? Or is it something wrong with the sperm and egg?

if you have trouble listening to teachers here's some ideas:

Drink water, drink water a lot you'll be refreshed. It's good when you feel tired in class.

Furiously take notes, then you wont get so bored.
