We recently did the scanning thing at a BBB in Mass., sending the order to the store in Evanston. But I'm getting nervous that 10,000 families will all descend on that store on the same day in Sept. and we'll be waiting in line for several hours.

Was this a mistake on our part? How horrible is this process? Is there a time we can go that will reduce the crush? Thanks for any info.

There are only 2000 undergraduates, a decent amount of whom come from Chicago, or fairly close by. So knock out all the Chicago families, because they’d probably just drive the stuff over. Then consider people who rented moving trucks, or shipped everything. Then think of all the people who got their stuff from other places like Walmart and such. All in all, I think if you count out all of those people, plus other situations I probably haven’t thought of, I don’t think it will be too bad.

We did that too (we are also in Massachusetts), but I don’t remember if we picked the stuff up on move-in day or the day before. Also, which BB&B did you order to: Wilmette or Skokie? Make sure you go to the right one! Anyway, it worked out well for us, and we actually went twice in one day. The lines were not too long, and they had almost everything that we had ordered in a giant box. Things might have changed since 2010, but our problem with move-in day was that there were so many activities for the students that my husband and I ended up doing all the shopping/picking up (we went to BB&B, Costco, Best Buy, and God knows where else!) without our daughter. Our daughter was in FUP (the Freshman Urban Program) so she had arrived a week before we did; however, she moved into her dorm (Willard) the same day as all the other freshmen.

I’m doing SAW (Summer Academic Workshop), and we move in on the 14th, which makes it much less hectic for me. I’ll definitely be out and about trying to help out wherever possible though
