My D has a bad back. Is mattress topper allowed? Is it useful - does it work with XL mattress?
She has a single at Dickson. She is told that there is no over head light and she should bring a floor lamp. I think read halogen lamp is not allowed. What do most people do?

you bring any kind of mattress pad that will fit on your bed.

also, you can bting any kind of lamp as well. I bought a nice floor lamp from Target in Ithaca for $15 and it works great and really lights up my room.

I was at Target the other day and saw these XL mattress pads! they're starting to bring all the college/dorm stuff!

I bought a regular twin foam top from Costco. <$100 and it comes with a cover. Son has used it 3 years at school and summers at home. There is a small gap and he says the pillow solves the problem. We have a King on our CA King bed, husband prefers the small gap at the feet, not the head.

The price has gone up. It's now $119 at Costco.:) Good, I am glad it won't be money wasted.

One of D's roomies first yr had a bad back and she was allowed to bring her own twin mattress from home. This only worked bc she lived less than a couple of hours away and her folks were able to get it there, but just throwing that idea out there. On the subject of those foam pads, spending a little more for a higher quality one will be well worth it - bought D a cheapie and it kept scrunching up under the sheets. lol. The next one from BB & B has lasted over 2 yrs and is fine.

nikrud - thanks. We will see how the mattress is. If it doesn't work out, we'll ship one to her. Some schools do not allow outside mattress because of fire code - needs to be fire resistant.

Has anyone used the bigredboxes.com service for shipping boxes prior to arriving? Positive experience?

Hmmmm... anyone have a link?

Also, anyone know the mattress measurements?

36 X 80 inches

I'd recommend getting a memory foam pad. They're extremely comfortable, and not too expensive. I just got a 2.5" one for myself.

If they don't have XL twin, I'd recommend getting queen or king and cutting it to fit. Memory foam can be easily trimmed with sharp scissors. This might be best even if they have the right size, sometimes they run small.

Go with big red storage. They are fairly reliable and they are the only shipping company that can deliver to your room before you get there. The only bad thing is their prices are steep. Another alternative would be to ship the boxes/trunks/luggage to your kids mailing address before you leave (I wouldn't ship them more then a week or two before move in day). Campus life will store everything and you can pick up it when you arrive and take it to the room yourself. They also let you borrow heavy duty carts so you don't have to carry anything. You might have to carry some stuff up the stairs in a few of the dorms though.
