I want to go to KP but I am not sure if my GPA is good enought..... can any of you tell me what your un-weighted GPA was? Also what about CFA scores what did you guys who were accepted get?

It's not all based on GPA. It is a combination of things. Which class are you applying to? If you are looking at 2012 and have not applied to your Senator or Representative, you may be too late for that. USMMA requires your nomination to be from your State. Do you excel at any sports? If so, a coach may be able to help you. Also, remember if they feel you are a good candidate, but need some more academic work you may get sent to NAPS or NMMI for a year to bring up your academics.

Here is a link to the minimum requirements from the Academy for the CFA
United States Merchant Marine Academy

Good Luck!

well i have a 3.3 un-weighted but 3.6 weighted and by the end of my senior year ill have taken 10-9 Ap classes... im not sure if this will help because KP doesnt give credit to AP's right? As far as sports im in crew but im not good enough for college i dont think. O by the way im still a junior in High school!!! I have time lol

SuzanneGra has given you great info and links to review.

You will certainly find that all the Academies are ABET certified, very serious about their Engineering -- which will translate into HARD Calculus, Chemistry, Physics. So, make sure you have good strength in those types of subjects. They are known as Plebe Killers, with good reason.

Study hard. Participate ACTIVELY in the clubs your are enjoying. CREW is a great way to be in good overall physical condition. Keep it up, or some type of activity ... (helps to handle stress levels too:) )

Good job on planning ahead and asking questions.

Wander by your congressman's website and see what the requirements are for submitting an application.

And if, ultimately, they offer you a prep-year somewhere. TAKE IT. I've seen a lot of great kids sent home to bone-up on Math and study skills. Take a time-management class somewhere as well.

Work hard. You DO want to do this... it is the journey of a lifetime.
Best of luck.

KP does not give automatic credit for your having taken AP classes in High School. It DOES, however, administer placement exams.. It could be possible to place OUT of having Calc requirements, Chem, etc. This is a pretty tough trick to pull off. Ultimately, this can translate into a lighter 1/c (senior) year.

I don't think that lightens your Plebe Year courses. It brings higher level courses into your Plebe Year. Others may have better facts on this. Of course, some just stay in the proscribed curriculum and get a GPA boost.

I have already started with all the paper work for my nomination im just scared that if I send my transcript to KP around this October or November and they see I have an un-weighted GPA of about a 3.4 maybe a little higher that it could hurt me. Do the not take into consideration what classes I have been taking? After all I would assume that they prefer candidates that challenged themselves in HS vs. just taking the easy rout to an "A.... What are your thoughts?

Keep taking challenging courses. From what I have seen and read, they take into account the type of courses that you take. I looked at USMMA website and could not find a student profile (avg grades and test scores, etc.) so I looked at collegeboard.com and searched for the the academy. They have some info about the % of MMA students that were in the top 20% of their HS graduating class, and about the test scores of the middle 50% of students at USMMA. USMMA site states that you have to have pre-calc, chem, and physics, also.

Check these sites and you should know where you stand with respect to others that made it in.

Take challenging courses and get good grades. Do well in your sport(s).

Good luck!

SeaKid011 what state are you in? KP has admission field reps all over that would be glad to assist you. By all means contact your field representative, he/she can help you through the process:

As stated earlier, KP looks at the overall student. They want a candidate that has strong math/science background. My son took college english and physics in high school. He was allowed to exempt english this trimester. He decided to take physics, because in the engineering studies, the more science/math you take the better off you will be in the long run. Try to bring up your GPA if possible. I've known kids to get appointments with 3.3 but the higher you can make it the better. Again, it also depends on your state. If you are from a highly competative state like, California, New York, Virginia, Maryland, etc you needed a stronger GPA and SAT's than if you were from Nebraska or a state that does not have a lot of competition.

As soon as applications for the class of 2013 open..apply. That way you can get your DoDMERB physical scheduled and out of the way.

I would say that the great equalizer for academics will be your class rank which is usually calculated after your junior year (sometimes earlier). GPA's from state to state or even between school districts in a given state are usually calculated in numerous ways - so even trying to convert a weighted gpa to an un-weighted gpa is not a clear cut process that establishes any type of parity between candidates. However, class rank reveals how you rank among your peers in a similar academic environment where everyone was graded using the same system. Class ranking also take into account the "weight" of the more challenging honors or AP courework. With this information the admissions office can take a look at the academic strength of your school and district to determine your scholastic qualification. However, as others have stated earlier this is only one component of evaluation - you are on the right track though. Do you have any idea at this point what your class rank is currently or projected to be at the end of this year?

Good Point tmr, one I failed to mention. When my son applied to KP they requested a lot of information about the course load, requirements, number of students attending a 4 year college and the like I assume this is because they were not familiar with our particular school system. As a side note, my son was top 4% out of 700 in his class, so I'm sure that helped. :)

I live in Florida..... is Florida a competitive state?

Do any of you care to share what you got on the CFA or what your son/daughter got?

Seakid, I live in south Florida and I received an appointment. I was recruited to USMMA for swimming, and I can tell you my stats when I applied.

1-My weighted GPA is 4.3 (3.4 (3.5 now changed) unweighted ) I only took 2 AP courses at my high school (And 2 college courses during the summer at a community college) but I stacked on honors courses.
2-SAT Scores - 510 verbal (Low, but qualifying. It is the minimum score you need. I highly recommend you do better than I did) & 640 math.
3-Activities - Swimming, Water Polo, Civil Air Patrol. More in detail but it really depends on you.
4-Class Rank - top 7%.

I got an LOA before I even turned in my CFA or received a nomination, but I got cleared by DoDMERB early. (September, October)

My CFA scores were

57 ft BB throw
8 pull ups
9.0 shuttle
64 sit ups
50 push ups
6:43 mile

I don't know how competitive Florida is, but I got a nomination from Senator Bill Nelson. At the interviews I did not encounter many people who were applying to KP.

I honestly believed I couldn't get in with any of these stats, but I did. It goes to show anything is possible. You are also lucky because I didn't even know about USMMA until my senior year. Well actually, I learned about it at USAFA summer seminar.

Although I haven't received word from USAFA which would be a tough choice if I get accepted, USMMA is currently my number one school.

wow man thats great congrats. Im surprised that their wasnt anyone trying to go to KP. anyone else wanna give out their stats? GPA and CFA scores?

I may be a bit embarrassed to share my unweighted GPA but I got accepted to Kings Point.

GPA: 3.3
Math SAT: 600
Verbal: 540
ACT: 25

CFA score I don't remember exacts but here is pretty close to what I got, and I was pretty sick with the flu as I did mine( I was getting sick everywhere, so don't attempt it if your sick):

Basket Ball throw: High 50's
Pull ups: 15 (that one is exact, I didn't forget)
Crunches: 95 (this one is exact too)
Push Ups: 48
Mile: 6:06 (this one is also exact)

I am from NJ and I think my sport helped me a bit.

My son is in Michigan. Was recruited as a wrestler.

Cross Country - Varsity 4 years - Wrestler Varsity 4 years (2 X All-State) - Track (Pole Vault) Captain of Wrestling and Cross Country team as Junior and Senior. National Honor Society and other clubs.

GPA: 3.655
Class Rank 26 - 252

Math SAT: 680
SAT Verbal: 540
ACT: 27 Composite
ACT Math: 30
ACT Science 28

CFA scores:
Basket Ball throw: 66
Pull ups: 17
Crunches: 86
Push Ups: 63
Shuttle 8.9
Mile: 7:30

Felt bad about his mile run (was run in a gym and not sure it was the right distance). Was told that this CFA test is just a Pass/Fail and not to re-take it to try and get it better.

He received Congressional nomination and Letter of appointment in early December.

Good Luck

Now, this is a bit dated.. and Kings Point may have set the admissions bar higher since my son got in.. but it might give some hope to those that dont have the greatest grades or SAT/ACT scores but have the DRIVE to succeed..

My sons had a 2.75 HS GPA (weighted). His SAT scores were 600 Math, 650 Verbal. His high school was highly competitive and did not rank its students. He took no AP classes and no advanced math or science courses. His CFA scores were good, but not impressive (I dont remember his scores exactly) He was a two year varsity letterman in cross country and team captain his senior year. The team finished third place in the region and just missed going to the (California) state meet. He wasnt one of the better members of the team and his times were unremarkable.

In his first attempt at gaining admission with the class of 2004 he was an alternate, but didnt get in. He got a job.. He enrolled at a JC and took an introductory to Physics course, an English course and tennis.. and thats it !!! He applied again the next year and was accepted for admission about two weeks before his class was to report.. Go figure. Maybe they gave him points for persistence when he reapplied.. Maybe they just took a chance on him.. Who knows.

He struggled his first year.. He finishing plebe year with a 2.28 GPA, failing Calculus which he retook and passed during the summer. He told me that NOTHING in his previous experience prepared him for the pace and intensity of the math and science courses at the academy.

He had to WORK and STUDY harder than he ever had before and it paid off. He ended up passing his license exam the first time and graduating in four years with a 2.52 GPA and a BS degree in Marine Transportation. And thats something only 65% of the original 283 members of his class did.

I got a LOA for Kings Point, haven't turned in my CFA (needed to finish application) scores since I got accepted to USNA.
GPA: Unweighted 3.6 Weighted: 4.0
Class Rank: 30% (Good High School)
Took Calc GT, Physics GT, Honors English, Honors History Junior Year
and Calc AP and Physics AP and Honors English Senior Year

Math SAT: 760
Verbal : 640

On USNA CFA:
BBall: 63
Pull ups: 4
Crunches: 70
Push ups: 58
Mile: 5:50

From maryland

wow thanks for all the info guys... please anyone who can give there stats continue to do so!! it helps a lot trust me!!

I am from Oklahoma and got a nomination from both Senators and my Congresswoman. Not a lot of competition here for a USMMA spot. Anyway these are my stats:

ACT Composite: 31
Verbal: 31
Math: 26
Reading: 33
Science: 32

3.8 weighted GPA

(I am in all AP and honors courses)

I play four varsity sports (cross country, swimming, soccer, and track) and I got recruited for cross country and swimmer. Supposedly I'm supposed to be pretty good next year up at KP, so I got my LOA in late December.

My CFA results are posted below (please keep in mind im a girl and a runner, so absolutely no muscle). I did this right after xc practice.
Pull ups: 2
