Being completely realistic here..

Okay, so I received a score of 1620 on my May SAT (I know, lame) and I'm looking into raising it tremendously on the October 4th SAT date.

Now, my question is: is it at all possible?

I'm currently enrolled in a 6 week SAT class, and I'm more than willing to put the time into the studying (especially math, since that's where I struggle). I've already commenced my journey towards excellence, and I've started to enhance my vocabulary by looking up words I don't know in reading, lists, etc.

So my end goal is a stable 2100, something I can look back on and be proud about.

Any hints? Suggestions? Strategies? Is it worth it? I have already committed myself to excellence academic wise when I made the decision to take schooling seriously in 1st grade, so a summer of studying should be an easy commitment for me.

Thanks for listening to my concern, and I appreciate all feedback on here.

A 480 point jump is a pretty daunting task, but you have 82 days till the SAT. The most important part of this journey is persistence, you might be revving to go right now, but imagine the weeks ahead. A lot can happen in 12 weeks. So here's my suggestion. Take 1 timed practice test every saturday or sunday (w/e fits you best). That amounts to 11 tests ( a bit overkill, but better safe than sorry). Buy Gruber's for math (it has a very well put together math section that guides you step by step.), BB (for tests). Rocket Review (reading, writing). Remember you have average a 160 point improvement across the board, this is going to really hard. Set goals. Do something like within the next two tests i'm going to score an 1800, then the next three tests an 1900, next four tests i'm going to break 2k. Don't expect to shoot to the stars immediately. However you're going to have a lot easier time than someone who wants to go from a 1900 to a 2300.

Here's a few Do's and Don'ts

Do:
Keep a consistant schedule
Go over answers, pinpoint problem areas
Be optimistic (the highest score i got on a diagnostic was a 2030, I got a 2150)
Enjoy your summer
Learn roots,prefixes, and suffixes
Read interesting challenging books (It doesn't have to be Dostoevsky or Dickens, just not something by Dan Brown or Rowling)

Don't:
Freak out
Be a shut in
Let your GPA suffer
Study 3000 word lists (it's just stupid)

If you work hard enough, i bet you can do it.

I agree with all of what Pimeson said. Now you just have to get off CC and go do it. Never take no for an answer, work work work until you finally reach your goal. If you try hard enough you certainly can do it.

Do everything said already! I also think you should eat healthy, drink lots of water and milk, work out some, sleep properly - to keep your stamina high;the SAT can be physically challenging..don't want your energy waning half way through the test. And also, have great fun with friends and family from time to time to balance the crazy...All the best! :D :D

^ you have no time for those activities if he wants to get above 2000

1 SAT a day!!

ok, im done, hahah ;D

It is possible....i did it. I started with a psat in the 168 and got a 2100 on the SAT.
My score went up 420 points with about 2 months of studying.

Awesome, thanks for the replies guys.

I'm going to hopefully check out Barnes and Noble this weekend for the Gruber's and Rocket Review. By the way, what does BB stand for?

Blue book. It's the official SAT study guide.

Definitely get the blue book, the official practice tests are a must-have

YOU CAN DO IT! Just try, you might not be able to get a 2100, but you could definitely get a higher score.

^ lol that sounds a little discouraging..><

why is going from a 1900 to a 2300 harder than going from a 1600ish to a 2100 according to Pimeson?

u got it wrong

pimeson said going from a 1600 to 2100 is EASIER than a 1900 to 2300.

Sorry...I'll repost my question here:
Why is harder to go from a 1900 to a 2300 than from a 1600 to a 2100?

2300 is almost perfect.

the SAT is on a curve, and Collegeboard wants very few scores to be close to "perfect" (2400) as possible...

therefore 2300 is very difficult and it's like you miss 3 questions you're down to 2300...

1600 to 2100, on the other hand, is not as close to "perfect". its hard, but accomplishable.

what about something like a score increase from a 1950 to a 2100/2200? Would that be reachable? I have around a 2050 right now...but I don't know if its too hard to raise

wow thats a big jump, but you can definitely do it if you put the time into it. u said u were struggling with math and math imo is the easiest to improve on next to writing so good luck. i got around an 1800 on my first sat and im kind of disappointed and im aiming for 2000~ in oct so, like you, i have to studying my @$$ off

bro,i m with you,i got a 1800 (cr-490.math-760,writing-550) in june sat.i m also appearing at october sat.my target is 2200 (cr-650,math-800,writing-750 target)

to the op: good luck. remember, if it doesn't work out, hedge your bets by also taking the ACT. who knows, that might be more your cup of tea.
