So I'm a 2nd year UF student applying for the UF nursing program. After this semester, my nursing GPA might be a 3.6, and my overall GPA a 3.8. The average nursing/overall GPA for those who get in the UF nursing program is around 3.8, so I'm a little below average.

My parents' ultimatum: If I get into the UF nursing program, they will continue supporting me (they pay for my rent, tuition, living expenses, everything). If I don't get in, they will cut me off, and I'll have to start supporting myself...I've never worked a day in my life, so I'm pretty terrified.

If I didn't get into UF's nursing program this year, my previous backup plan was to apply for UF's accelerated nursing program after getting my bachelor's in another major, but since my parents gave me this ultimatum (yesterday), I think I may need to transfer to another school's nursing program...but I still don't know how I would support myself.

This seems ridiculous that I can't support myself at age 20, because I know plenty of people have to work or take out loans for college, but I've been overprotected and sheltered under a rock throughout my life, and I've lived on-campus in a dorm for the past two years because it's "safer"...I still don't know how to drive, and can't cook.

I guess I'm looking for advice, and comparisons between Florida BSN nursing programs.

You may want to start a thread in the Financial aid forum, after you’ve talked this through with your parents. Your first problem is with how colleges determine your “need”. They require your parents to fill out the FAFSA forms and using your parents financial information they determine if you qualify for grants and loans. Without your parents support (such as filling out that FAFSA!), you may not qualify for any aid (at any school).

So your first step is determining why your parents want to “cut” you off. See if you can reach some compromise, what do they really need? Then see if they will continue to fill out the FAFSA, so you could qualify for grants, or much more likely loans. If they refuse to fill out the FAFSA, your options are limited. You will need to return home (hopefully that’s still an option) and find work.

It is possible to take a few years off from school, work and save for college, and then return. That’s a road several of my friends took.

Keep in mind that those other schools listed are about as expensive as UF; the one thing that would significantly reduce your expenses is living at home and commuting to one of those program.

Good Luck!

PS: Remember, as long as you’re a “dependent” student, you need your parents to complete the FAFSA. See the attached link for details.

My parents threatened to cut me off because they don’t think I’m focused enough on my academics. They think that nursing at UF is the best, because UF is the “most prestigious” public state school in Florida…they said they might support me at FSU’s nursing program (nowhere else, especially not at a community college), but I don’t know anything about it. I’ve just heard that USF’s nursing program was comparable to or better than UF’s.

I’m sure they’ll help me fill out the FAFSA, though. I can’t return home, even if they were to support me until I graduate. Complicated family matters. And I can’t commute…don’t have a license or a car.

Also, some friends have suggested filing as an “independent” student…but I wouldn’t find out until I get my letter of acceptance/rejection from UF nursing program around July/August.

I’m sorry you’re going through this. It sounds like you have a pretty dang good gpa to me. I’m sure that some very good students get rejected from UF’s nursing program. Heck it happens at my community college. My friend busted her butt and had almost a 4.0 and still wasn’t accepted when she applied the first time. I hope that you can get it figured out. If your parents can afford to pay for all your stuff then you probably wouldn’t qualify for grants anyway. Its going to be very hard to completely support yourself while attending nursing school anywhere. I’m sure it can be done, but it’s going to be hard. I think you need to go get a DL first thing.

I know this isn’t really helpful, but USF’s nursing program is also really good, one of my best friends is in it and she loves it. She’s currently shadowing nursed at TGH. So if all else fails (which I hope it doesn’t), USF is a decent school. It’s not UF, but I’m sure you could get a bunch of scholarships and aid from them, I hear they’re very helpful with it. I’m in the same boat moneywise I’m waiting for my UF Fall 2014 transfer decision and I’m just as useless (no offense lmao), but if there’s a will there’s a way. Good luck!
