Belmont University

Hoping someone can help...hardly anyone is on the Christian College page :/ How is Belmont? Looking for interesting professors that get to know the students, somewhat challenging academics, friendly students, opportunities for spiritual challenge and growth. It seems it might have a more creative vibe? My daughter is interested in creative writing, psychology, maybe elementary ed, maybe dance minor. She is definitely a creative type, really wants a Christian school. (the interest in dance eliminates a lot of other christian colleges)

Things liked/disliked?

Thanks!

We toured Belmont earlier this year.

Belmont requires 60 hours of chapel/convocation in four years and some religion classes (not many) in order to graduate. A course on the Old Testament and another on the New Testament were mentioned.

I sensed a creative vibe. We saw musicians playing instruments on the grounds and we kept running into a group of students with a video camera setting up little scenes. Most of the kids in our session were looking at either the music business program or the musical theater program.

Cons: no football team, lots of construction happening at the moment, co$t, limited merit aid opportunities.

We went from meeting to meeting (admissions, honors program, department) and small class size and your professors getting to know you were emphasized in all sessions.

I also got the impression that Belmont is becoming more competitive and the student profile is changing as more higher stat students (mentioned in the admissions meeting were bigger numbers of applicants with high 20’s and above on ACT) are applying for admission there.

Thank you! Did you happen to visit Lipscomb also? We just learned about it recently. We will visit both on the same trip. If you did we would love to hear about it also.

I have some friends whose daughter graduated from Belmont University – she started out in nursing and then went on to medical school. I got the impression from them that the daughter was very pleased with what Belmont offered in terms of academics; and that its location near Vanderbilt University as well as being in Nashville was also a plus. Belmont formerly was affiliated with the Tennessee Baptist Convention, but disassociated several years ago (and I think was sued by the Baptists for return of monies provided by the TBC – not sure how it turned out), and is now a non-denominational Christian school. My friends are card-carrying Methodists, and didn’t seem to think that Belmont was very heavy-handed in terms of forcing a particular brand of Christianity on its students. You are right about lots of creative types; some very good a capella groups are at the school, and you have the Nashville music industry around also.

Lipscomb University (formerly David Lipscomb College) is affiliated with the Church of Christ, I believe, and so may be a little more restrictive in its official social policies than Belmont. I know a teacher whose intellect I greatly respect who attended Lipscomb; she said that she had a wonderful experience there as an English major. Some other friends who looked at Lipscomb recently on a college visit said that it had a very nurturing feel to it.

I think that Belmont offers academic dance programs; I’m not sure about Lipscomb.

We did not tour Lipscomb that week. (We did tour Vandy and MTSU.)
