Below 700= death sentence for HYP applicant?

Okay, so I gave the SAT subject tests today and...I had a really, really bad headcold that worsened during the end of the test (bad, bad idea to give 3 at once) and as a result my Maths 1 was DISASTROUS. I'm praying for a 700+, but I don't know...I could have gotten even lower (I'm praying for a sweet curve...is it me or was that test tough?). On the plus side, Lit and Maths 2 went okay...I'm angling for a 750+ in both, maybe 700+ in Lit. If I get ~710 in Lit and ~750 in Maths 2, will a ~690 in Maths 1 kill any chance I have at an Ivy/ Williams/ UChicago? Do I have to try and mess about with score choice or something? Or do I try and retake standby in December? Or should I get my maths teacher to write a note to the colleges saying that she believes my Level 1 scores are not representative of my true mathematical ability?

Dont most colleges only want 2 subject tests anyway?

Dont most colleges only accept EITHER math 1 or math 2, not both?

Just take them again in December.

I haven’t registered though, so I can only hope to get a standby.

The thing is, though, I have my own school exams to concentrate on (I’m an international, I need to do brilliant on them) in March, I really don’t want further distractions now, I want to be over with the freaking thing. I’m just hoping I don’t get bellow 700, however, if I do, does that flush my application down the drain?

@JME23: I know most need 2, but since CB sends ALL scores…will they see an exceptionally bad maths 1 and blanch?

Kinda of a related question. I know i did bad on my MathII and Chem tests and i will be retaking them in dec/jan. if im applying to HYPS should i cancel these scores since i can’t use score choice. Or can i cancel AFTER i get my score report on these atleast, bc i didn’t do that bad. but im afraid of a below 600-700 on the chem.

Wait, why can’t you use score choice?

I know it’s not a fun scenario to be in, but it’s a bit comforting to have someone in the same boat…

I don’t think the score-choice restrictions apply to subject tests.

You’ve always been able to pick those scores, and unlike the normal SAT, there’s no warning when you uncheck a box.

Can I send the scores after I get them, though? The SAT REALLY confuses me. Can I wait till I receive the scores, use score choice and then send it or will it be too late?

yes, you can obviously send your scores after you get them but that would require a fee of 9.5 $ per univ. The free score reports must be sent within the 7 days after the test…

and sending november sat subject scores wouldn’t be considered late…

its not a death sentence if you have wonderful everything else
i bought a book
some applicants for Harvard that go in are
(book was written by Harvard’s senior admissions officer)
ethnicity- white, rank 22/500
sat 730 math, 580 verbal
sat 2 math 1 650 writing 590 ush 570
AP spanish 4 eng lit 3
commitment to football played at national level

moral- you dont need high academic stats for harvard, you can have strong sport stats for harvard and ok grades, as IVY LEAGUE was made on the basis of a committee that excelled in sports.

Becasue that was a reccruited athlete.

Can you post the amazon link for that book?

yeah thanks for reiterating my point by repeating it.

[Amazon.com: What It Really Takes to Get Into Ivy League and Other Highly Selective Colleges (9780071412599): Chuck Hughes: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Really-League-Highly-Selective-Colleges/dp/007141259X)

Hold up, Harvard wants three.

Do you really think that Math 1 and Math 2 count as two separate tests to them?

The point of three tests is to test a RANGE of subjects.

Math I and Math II don’t count as two.

Actually, from what I’ve heard (I know an unhooked applicant who got into Princeton when they required 3, submitting Maths 1, 2 and Physics) they do count as 2 different tests? I agree it doesn’t fulfil the objective of the SAT 2s, but my education system here is different in India. I’ve taken the commerce stream, which means for the past 2 years I’ve only studied business/eco/accounting, english and maths. So I haven’t really done enough coursework for any other subject test. That’s just how our Indian education system rollls (you decide the direction of your career in 10th grade). Which is why Maths 1,2 and Lit is all I can take.

meghnasridhar - i’m in a similar boat. i’m hoping to be ready for lit in december but all i have is math i, ii, and chem. they count as separate tests

" - moral- you dont need high academic stats for harvard, you can have strong sport stats for harvard and ok grades, as IVY LEAGUE was made on the basis of a committee that excelled in sports. "

How many people fretting over getting less than a 700 on their SAT subject test, spending time on this board, are going to be a recruited for division 1 sports? Your point is, well, pointless.

If the OP was getting recruited to an ivy league school for sports, he/she wouldnt be here worrying about sat scores.

For those of us not getting recruited to a top school, high academic stats obviously matter.

Yea, the ivy league began as just a sports conference, but now it means much more than that.

loserbich- yay, someone on the same boat. If there’s only one regret I have about not taking Science, its these damn subject tests…
