Son is a freshman at IU now and was accepted into Hutton Honors College after his first semester at IU. I looked at the Hutton website, and seems to me the Hutton Honors College Scholarship is only offered to incoming freshman, so what is the benefit of being in Hutton after first semester then if there is no scholarship available after started at IU?

I think the main benefit of being accepted into Hutton is that you are then able to take honors courses or honors sections of regular courses. Grading can be easier and the teachers are, for the most part, the cream of the crop.

Is your son also in Kelley, or applying to Kelley. He will be able to take honors classes in Kelley his sophomore year if he is in Hutton. This is a great way to keep his Kelley gpa high, as the Kelley honors I-core prerequisites have high grading.

It is also great for keeping COAS gpa high, and earning the “honors notation” at graduation. Even Kelley students can easily get this designation if they take a mix of Kelley honors classes and COAS honors classes (that will also fulfill Kelley distribution option requirements) totaling 21 credits.

The option to take honors versions of classes also makes scheduling much easier.

Thanks IllinoisMom and bthomp for your replies. Son is in UD and going to apply to Kelley very soon. How much harder than regular classes are the honors classes? Any ideas?

The honors classes in the college of arts and sciences are probably easier and more interesting than most non-honors classes, and the grading is much easier. These are the HON H203, H204, and H205 classes. Also H211 and H212 and some others.

The Kelley honors classes are more work than others, but easier grading.

Honors classes look good on the transcript, too, as well as being in Hutton Honors College looks good on the resume.

Here is grading on last semester’s honors classes in COAS.

You can find Kelley honors grades in the same report for classes like A205, A207, X106, X202, K204, X206, . . .

Thanks bthomp for the info.
