For Current Student: Kelley and Hutton Honors

Can a current student in Kelley and in Hutton Honors please give us a sense of the benefits of being involved with Hutton given your status as a business student? What are the pros and cons? What does Hutton provide that perhaps would not be available through one of the school-specific or other honors options? Whatever detail you can provide about your experience would be helpful. Thanks.

You should definitely do Hutton. There is no downside to being in Hutton - they don’t force you to take any honors classes, but you have the option to the honors versions of most Kelley classes. If you choose to do so, you can take 18 credit hours of honors classes - mostly classes you would take anyway - and get the general honors notation which looks good on a resume.

Even if you think you don’t want to take honors classes, I would still do it just to keep the option open. I would also highly recommend taking BUS-K 204, the honors version of K201. The honors version gives way better grades because there are more free points. Some honors classes are definitely harder and probably not a great idea to take, but you’ll get a feel for that from other students. There are no negatives to being in Hutton in my opinion, and there is some upside if you choose to take honors classes.

My daughter is a current senior in the Business School. She was automatically accepted into the Hutton Honors program when she enrolled as a freshman direct admit. The program sounds nice, but if you also apply to the Honors Business program at the end of your freshman year (which I feel has many more perks than the HH program), you may find it near impossible to meet all of the requirements to do both. Hutton requires 21 hours (not 18) of credit from their list of approved courses, and they only accept 2 courses per department. So if you take the required 4 Business Honors classes, only 2 of them count towards Hutton Honors.

In order to have 150 hours of college course work to sit for the CPA exam, my daughter had to take classes at our community college every summer. Doing this satisfied many of her IUB General Ed classes, but they could not be applied towards HH. Then if you want to get a major and a minor, like Accounting and Finance, your class load is packed full of requirements, not leaving much room for anything else!

@paddlemom3 Did your D go in with any AP/IB/DE credit?

Yes she did. She received 3 hours credit for AP biology (score of 3 on the AP test), and 6 hours for AP Econ (micro and macro with a score of 4 on both tests). The Bio credit went toward Bio 104 and the Econ credit applied to Econ 201 and 202. I highly recommend taking Econ in summer school if possible. My daughter said it is a tough class at IU.

Another Kelley mom here. I totally agree with iubaccounting, there is no downside of being in Hutton. You do not have to work toward an honors notation to stay in Hutton. You can take advantage of as little or as much as you want. Some nice advantages of Hutton in addition to being able to take honors business classes before you are accepted into the Business Honors or ACE programs are additional scholarship opportunities and other extra-curricular activities. My D received a study abroad scholarship from Hutton, was a Hutton Honors host for two years, and has attended a few Hutton Honors lectures and activities. She is not working toward an honors notation and has only taken one honors class outside of Kelley.

@paddlemom3 My bad, you’re right about the 21 hours, but I think you are misinterpreting the “department” language.

When it says “department”, it means a department within Kelley such as accounting or finance. So for example, you could take 2 honors accounting classes, 2 honors finance classes, an honors business communication class, and 2 HON-H classes to get the 21 credit notation. Also, Honors I-Core counts for 14 credits if you take that as part of Business Honors. I talked to an advisor last week and she confirmed that the above is true. I was required to take the honors versions of C106 and K204 for ACE and will take Honors I-Core, so getting the honors notation was only 2 extra courses for me. I enjoyed both of them and had extra space anyway, so it was worth it for me.

Again, this honors notation is completely optional, and I would still do Hutton even if you don’t want to do the notation. A link with info about the notation is below.

Good to know! I will pass along the detailed info. I was just looking at it from a scheduling point of view. My daughter is still in the Hutton program, but has not really had time to take advantage of everything they offer. She will miss out on the honors notation because of this!

Many classes you cannot take in summer - make sure a “local” school is an option. Especially for Kelley.
