Bentley or Kelley?

I’m guessing I will have around a 3.5 GPA at IU or Bentley, probably in some Honor classes, and I know I will have excellent interviews. I’m an excellent speaker with a lot of personality.

What would be the best school to get into a middle market investment banking firm?

Which school would be better to get into a big four accounting firm?

Finally, which school would be better to get an internship your sophomore, junior, and senior year, “maybe freshman?”

Your choice should depend on the following factors

1)Location- Most of the middle market IB recruiting is regional. Kelley leads to good options in Indy/Chicago.

2)Its really hard to get an internship after Freshman year. In Kelley, its not that easy to get an internship opportunity after sophomore year, this is due to the fact that most companies have grad date reqmts. Your resume goes through the undergrad career service office, so they might not forward your resume if your grad date doesn't match the company's requirements. Career fairs provide a good chance to build contacts. There are a lot of internship opportunities after junior year. You should go to www.ucso.indiana.edu and check the stats ( I think abt 70% of juniors get internships). Kelley is good for Finance in general.

Both are good colleges, you should check the career services websites and see which college gives you a better shot at getting a job in your desired location.

Kelley might be better for the Big Four

thanks, i really appreciate it, anyone have more opinions on Bentley?

All of the big 4 interview at Bentley! I have met several accounting majors who had strong GPAs, and all that I met had MULTIPLE job offers! Frankly, if you have a good GPA, either school will probably get you a job. If you want to work in the northeast or eastcoast, Bentley will probably be more connected. Don't forget: Bentley started as a school for accounting and finance. Those are the areas that they are strongest in and have the best placement.

but in terms of ranking, kelley kills bentley

I have said it before and will say it again, for accounting, ranking is almost irrelevant! Say that mantra 6 times so it sinks in.

Accounting curriculum is mandated by the state boards of accounting with some additional requirements by AACSB (Assocation to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business),which is an additional accreditation of business programs of which both schools meet. This is why a number of top business schools don't offer a major in accounting because it is so structured (such as CMU). These schools don't want some board of accouting determining curriculum

As long as a school is reasonably well thought of in accounting, which applies to both Bentley and Kelly, the GPA and interview will be determinative and NOT the ranking. I can't say this enough times. Also, the location of the school is important because partners usually hire from schools in their locations. Thus, if you want a job in or near Indiana, Kelly would be the preferable school. If you want a job in the NE or even the East Coast, Bentley would be the better school.

Bottom Line: forget rankings in accounting. As long as a school is in the top 50 or so, it won't matter. In fact, if you have a good enough GPA, your school doesn't even have to be in the top 50. The only thing that matters is the GPA. Moreover, studies have shown that private schools give out a slightly better GPA. This makes sense because private schools tend to be more nurturing and want to have lower attrition. After all, they want to keep the tuition. State schools, on the other hand, need to make room for transfers from junior colleges. They don't care as much about keeping their students. In fact, they have the imputus to flunk out kinds and make more room.

By the way, I was also involved in the recruiting process for a big national accounting firm. I know what I am talking about.

what about for finance

Well, I can't speak for Indiana, but Bentley started as a school for accounting and finance. With their trading room and other terrific facilities, they may well have the edge. Personally, I don't like most state schools because they tend to be less nurturing and more uncaring about their students. However, if money is an issue then I would pick Indiana. No school is worth being in debt over 50K in my opinion.

It seems like Bentley would be a very narrow place to spend four years. And after graduation what do alums get together to do--watch a trading screen? I'd prefer getting together to watch some Big 10 football and basketball.

Actually sports are pretty big here at Bentley too. Everyone comes out for the football games. Last year basketball was huge too, since we were undefeated and were almost in the playoffs. I would say that you wouldn't lose out on the sports aspect. Also our mens and womens rugby teams are the undefeated. There are also tons of organizations and clubs that you can join. It is not a narrow place at all.

Well I'm not an Alum but I would say that when I graduate I'm not going to get together with them and just watch a trading screen.

Definitely go to IU Kelly - better academics, better campus, better sports.
