I have been accepted to the honors program at UConn and received a full tuition scholarship from Traveler’s Insurance that pretty much guarantees me a job with them after college.
However, i have always wanted to live and work in Boston, so Bentley is in a much better location. And it is ranked much higher than UConn business. I also like the Bentley campus a lot better, and I recieved a third-tuition merit scholarship from them ($14000 per year).
I plan to major in either finance or marketing, but I think I am leaning more towards marketing.
What do you guys think is a smarter choice? UConn would be a little bit cheaper, but Bentley is still affordable. Also, I think working for an insurance company would be very boring, so maybe going to Bentley would give me more options. I’m really stressing out about this and I need your help. Would it be dumb to turn down the honors program and full tuition scholarship to UConn just to go to Bentley?
Doesn’t your Traveler’s Insurance scholarship work with Bentley? Check with them.
Majoring in finance will offer better job opportunities than marketing. If you choose marketing, double major in statistics (nowadays, marketing without a very strong statistics background = useless).
Why actuarial science? It’d make more sense to double major in marketing and statistics (or major in 1, minor in the other).
What’s your parents’ budget? How much more than UConn is Bentley? Can you afford that if you take on the federal loans and a summer job? If not, how would you pay the difference (do you have work study, work off campus during the year, ask your parents to take on loans for you?)
@MYOS1634 I believe Bentley is going to be about $8000 more than UConn. If I go to Bentley, I might dual major in Marketing and Liberal Arts (with a concentration in Media) in order to go into the media side of marketing. I might minor in statistics if I can. If money wasn’t an object, would it be dumb to turn down the UConn Honors program and the Traveler’s Insurance scholarship/program that pretty much guarantees me a job with them just so I can go to Bentley?
Marketing without statistics is useless nowadays. Period. That is, no one will hire someone with a marketing degree who doesn’t have a strong statistics background. You can do Applied Math major + Media minor + Marketing minor. Or Marketing with Mathematical Sciences minor or Marketing and Quantitative Perspective majors with a Media minor. But today, marketing depends on data analysis and on a thorough understanding of statistics. There’s no going around that. http://www.bentley.edu/offices/academic-services/minor-mathematical-sciences http://www.bentley.edu/academics/lsm-concentrations#quant
Let go of the “almost guarantees me a job” thing. If yo do well at Bentley, you’ll have a job too.
So, where will the $8,000 come from? Can your parents afford it? Will you take on federal loans? Work this summer?
@MYOS1634 I missed the admitted students open house because it was the same day as UCONN’s. I am going to an admitted students panel and tour this upcoming week. My parents will be able to pay for most of Bentley. I may have to take out some loans. However, for UCONN I would have 0 loans.
As long as both are affordable (ie., you work over the summer/ work 6-8 hours a week during the year/ take no more than 5.5K in federal lonas) you’re good. Sure, no loans is good, but Bentley isn’t bad.
However you should wait till you’ve gone to admitted students day and visited Bentley before you make a final decision.
@MYOS1634 thank you so much. I really want to go to Bentley but I needed some reassurance that turning down the full scholarship to UConn isn’t dumb. Just wondering, are you a student, teacher, parent, college official?
Let’s leave it at “adult”.
Don’t turn down anything for now - go visit Bentley, do an overnight, ask students questions, attend a class, taste the food, read the paper… then decide.
