Berkeley Economics

I'm an Economics Major (transfer) with a 3.61, and was surprised to see I got in, however, as a spring admit. Nonetheless I am happy to be accepted.
I have a lot of questions with this.

Because I am a transfer, would I be graduating a semester late because of the spring set back? Or am I able to take upper division classes at Berkeley?
I have /will have all my pre-reqs done by fall, and have plenty of GEs (I dont think i need anymore at all).

I was also reading that if I talk to my admissions officer, and they allow me, I may be able to attend a 4 year during the fall. So does this mean I can use my admission to UCSD, go there for one quarter then just ditch them? haha

Lastly, having a 3.61 GPA (maybe high 3.5 after this semester), what are my chances of getting into the economics major / department when I apply in the spring? I didnt realize Berkeley doesnt admit directly into the major like the other UCs do =/

thanks

you can’t goto UCSD because that’d require you to send a SIR to them which would obviously go against Berkeley requesting you to only send one SIR.

hey krisl… we are on the same boat… i also have UCLA math/econ option open for me… cal spring econ tho

very nice loopy, congrats. any idea where you are heading?
any idea how hard it is to get into the Berkeley Econ department? lol im wondering if my 3.5-3.6 will even have a chance or if i should head some place else

Ya, me too same boat. Econ 3.65 GPA Spring Admit. Definately taking it. As for going to a 4 year university you cannot do that without talking with a counselor for approval and as for getting into our major you just have to complete the pre-reqs with a 3.0 GPA and you’re in :)

i got in for applied math and I am looking to transfer into econ! but I think econ is a pretty impacted major.

I am rejected by UCB econ with a 3.9 gpa and I have been sad for last 2 days.

as a transfer student, we need to take one of these classes our first semester … Economics 100A or 101A (or equivalent)
Economics 100B or 101B (or equivalent)

ive been doing more reseach lol and looking at the 08-09 year, during Spring of 09 (because im a spring admit) only class offered was 101A… thats micro economics. i was doing some reading of the syllabus (of prof card) and it says ‘emphasizing the applications of calculus and linear algebra to the problems of consumer decision making’…
if thats the only class that is going ot be offered in spring '10 and i have to take that … WTH>?!?!!? haha
thus far i have only gotten up to calc 2… linear algebra is 2 steps away from that , how the heck am i supposed to be able to do that? … or am i over reacting?

why do i get a feeling tht all econ majors have been admitted in spring only?
ne 1 knows for sure if any 1 got admitted to fall semester? for econ?

I got admitted for the fall semester as a pre-economics major…and I was surprised I was admitted at all lol I would actually love to switch with someone for spring 2010 lol

4.0 got rejected…damn it…

I just posted this in a similar thread but this was the thread I was looking for. KrisL, I have the exact same situation as you(enough transfer units and all pre-reqs completed). I assume if you create a heavier work load than you will still graduate 2011( which would be 20 units a semester not including summer-good luck if you can handle it). And no you can’t take upper-division in the fall, hence why you were not accepted for the fall term. It seems you are very goal oriented like myself and want to graduate by spring 2011. I went to SDSU my frosh year and hated it more than anything so I decided to go to a CCC for a year and transfer. I am going to talk to the econ department this week and see if I can hopefully get a semesters worth of units out of the way at SDSU during summer and fall since I am still enrolled there. If anyone is trying to do the same thing or similar please let me know what the department tells you. What are some spring admits doing in the fall if not taking classes? I am just trying organize some options so I make the best use out of this downtime.

it’s not that hard to be an econ major once accepted to cal.

200/300 get in.

i’m thinking of being an econ major…more likely i’ll keep my major as stats though out of my own preference.

anyone know how good an economics BA degree from Berkeley looks?
i mean, does berkeley have a lot of recruiters looking for someone with a Economics BA? or would i probably still have a tough time finding a job?

There are many recruiters at Berkeley, however, you can’t assume that they will come after you. In this economy, you gotta send your resumes out to as many places as possible , interview as often as you can , and hope that an offer is sent to you.

So yes, an Econ degree from Berkeley is very good. You’ll have a tough time finding a job if your GPA is low , you have high demands for a starting salary , or are applying to positions that usually aren’t given to those without any experience.
