Berkeley Fall Extension

just wondering, what exactly is fall extension? i hear things about it, but i dont really know what it is. can fall applicants be deferred to spring semester? how difficult is it for one of these students to get housing in dorms? how many students are admited this way? and does berkeley have waitlisting as well?

they take the bottom pool of the accepted people, and put them in fallX depending on how many people were accepted

you take fallX classes outside of campus for the fall semester, and youre then able to go to the main campus like a normal student in the spring

of the fallX students i know, one got put in bowles (all male), and the rest live in triples

a few hundred are admitted per year through it

no waitlist

Actually, almost 1/3 of the people of the people admitted go to fall extension.

And yes, the bottom of the admitted students have their admissions deferred to spring.

fall extension is a program offered to freshmen spring admits. I believe it is limited to 600 students. CAL has had Spring admits for both freshmen and transfers since the 80s. If you call the admissions office, they say it is due to attrition during the school year that they can take new students in the Spring. I don't know whether it is a straight bottom of the admit population, but I found a webpage where you can do queries on the statistical profile of admits, and the stats do trend lower for Spring Admits as compared to Fall Admits.

My S. was Spring Admit this year, and he attended the Extension Prorgram. He had on-campus housing in a double. There are plenty of housing options in Berkeley, and some cater to Spring Admits. One suggestion is to apply to the Theme houses as a strategy for getting on-campus housing.
