Hello CC,
I got a email today from Berkeley asking me to fill out a questionnaire. It was for a special talent (very unique, recognized on the international level). I could see why they are asking for this, but what threw me off was I never thought that I would be "borderline."
My essays were great, with lot of time put in.
UC GPA 4.25
ACT:32
This is higher than the average UC Berkeley admission stats, so why did I get this questionnaire? Even if I did not have the special achievement, I was expecting to be admitted.

See if this thread is helpful:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/636165-uc-berkeley-supplemental-freshman-questionnaire.html

doesn’t help me in my case b/c that link only mentions borderline students, which i dont consider myself as

Read posts #7 & #8 on the link that I provided

sorry, i’m still confused. #8 says “The first two would move people up whose academic performance alone didn’t make the cut” Are my sole academic stats not enough to make the cut?

andyyyc27,

Please humble yourself. No one is admitted to Berkeley solely based on academics. I would really advise you to use this as an opportunity to show more about yourself personally to gain admission to the university.

I received this questionnaire, filled it out, and was accepted to UC Berkeley.

Or don’t, and save that place for someone who does not feel quite so entitled to a spot at UCB.

Do out of state students get the freshmen questionnaire? OR is it only in-state?

agg999, not everyone gets the questionnaire. It’s only a few, generally borderline, applicants. I don’t think instate/OoS makes a difference, and I think transfers get them sometimes too. It’s basically anyone they want more information about.

andyyy: Stop complaining and fill it out. They cared enough to ask, the least you could do is reply.

“Expect” seems to be a word overused on this site. Always expect the unexpected my dear

@andyyy, can you give a sense of the special talent on a national scale, if you don’t want to reveal specific talent, can you please give a “like” example?

berkeley’s average accepted gpa is a 4.37… and average act is around a 31.5. thats hella borderline

That GPA must be uncapped UC GPA though, not capped UC GPA.

The most recent common data set published by UCB for 2012-2013 admissions shows the Average high school GPA of all degree-seeking, first-time, first-year (freshman) students was GPA: 3.84 (the data does not indicate if this was weighted or not, capped or not)

(I think this data refers to admitted students although it is not clear)

^^
That is most likely the unweighted UC GPA.

OP:
I agree to the previous posters above. Humble yourself. Is the GPA that you mentioned your capped UC GPA? What’s your unweighted UC GPA? How these GPAs compare to your schoolmates that applied to UCB?

How many AP did you take? Also compare to other students in your school, did you take the most rigorous load?

Also, what college within UCB did you apply? IF you applied to COE, what major?

Your ACT is borderline, imo.
