Berkeley Regents Scholarship

@hmmm: You keep fluctuating! lol  I hope we ARE accepted, nonetheless.

^Thereā€™s nothing wrong with that, and Iā€™m not scoffing at the opportunity. Iā€™m just saying that Iā€™m not going to assume Iā€™ve been admitted, as past invitees are insisting, without actual proof. Iā€™m not saying anything about the invitation itself, just about the assumptions that are being made.

@cassnoix-yeah, haha. but my friend asked someone they knew at Cal (administration) about the indication of acceptance, and was told that ā€œthere are no guarenteesā€. No matter what the implcit information may be or what has happened in the past, the only response I have gotten directly from Cal itself on the matter is ambiguity (although Iā€™m not sure the contact was part of a scholarship department). Hence, my caution to make assumptions.

When you go to your Regents interview and you check in, theyā€™ll probably give you this little ā€œlet me be the first to congratulate you on your acceptance to Berkeleyā€ tidbit. Youā€™re probably doing the best thing by being cautious though.

^-- i will be looking forward to hear those words :3

Donā€™t know if you will hear it. I think the scholarship office got some heat for congratulating the students last year. But you can do your little victory dance since you are very likely accepted. You just wonā€™t hear it from the scholarship office.

Just as a general note, each UC campus makes its own admission and scholarship decisions. Iā€™m not sure why students assume the UCs divvy up the students based on grades and so forth. If no one has made this clear before, I will make it clear: each UC makes its own admission decisions and scholarship decisions (Regentsā€™, Chancellorā€™s, Alumni Scholarships, etc.); acceptance or invitation to apply for scholarships at one UC campus is not indicative of your status at another UC campus.

Update: I got the physical letter (just a small postcard?) a couple of days ago, and a call a few moments ago from a Berkeley Rep. person.

I got call too; she told me theyā€™d tell us something about admissions decisions on our interview day when I brought the matter up. Not sure how relaible that is, though.

are regents scholarships only offered to in-state people? What are the most important factors?

In-state, out-of-state, and internationals (so, everyone) are all candidates for regents. It seems to be a more rigorous form of admissions where they want solid grades and test scores plus something notable on the side whether it be strong leadership, clear passion for a subject, international achievements, the standard fare. Iā€™m guessing that the top 5~7% of the applicant pool qualifies, although Iā€™m not sure what percentage of candidates pass the interviews.

I really think they focused more on what you wrote on your essays or if they sensed something ā€œdifferentā€ about you (I wrote quite a bit about my personality and beliefs)- I have no ECS beyond an unfocused 200 hours from Key Club and volunteering at the library, no sports, no clubsā€¦ and a 1890 or 1870 (?) SAT score.

However, I did have a ~4.4 GPA along with being rank 2 of my junior year.

What Iā€™m saying is, you can bring more to the table still even if you donā€™t have amazing anything else.

are you sure? my grades/test scores are really solidā€¦ but I didnā€™t receive any notice and neither did anyone else where I live

also, in terms of essay, I donā€™t want to sound arrogant, but I think they were fineā€¦ they got me an hpme interviewā€¦

are scholarships exempt from the blue and gold opportunity plan? for example, my parents make less than $70,000 so UCs will cover my tuition costs if my cal grant/pell grants donā€™t already cover it.

so letā€™s say i only get $3000 total from both the cal/pell grants. and i get a $2000 scholarship (regents or w/e). and letā€™s say the tuition is $10,000. will the Blue and gold plan cover the remaining $7,000 or will they only cover $5,000? thus forcing me to use the $2000 scholarship on my tuition. if the latter is the case, then the significance of earning any scholarships isnā€™t worth worrying about since i wonā€™t be able to use that money anyway

Like I said, I think they look for something beyond that, be that leadership, operating clubs, showing passion towards your interest, etc.

My grades were solid and my SAT score was subpar, but many people have solid grades + test scores. You have to set yourself apart from that, as well. Doesnā€™t mean you donā€™t get good grades/score, though.

yea, Iā€™m just really worried because Iā€™ve done research at a pretty high ranked university and won awards for it, done a lot of hospital volunteering/shadowing/camps/etc, have a lot of leadership in clubs, art stuff, etcā€¦
I just wonder if there is a preference for california students

cassenoixā€™s right. Grades and scores alone will not cut it, but usually they will keep you in the running. I think they are trying to find people who will contribute to the community, somewhat like Stanfordā€™s admissions in my opinion. Of course there are many students who add to the community who arenā€™t Regentsā€™ candidates but thatā€™s sort of what they seem to be looking for. Itā€™s really hard to tell with these sort of things. I have no idea how they pick the actual ~600 winners from the entire candidate pool of ~27,000.

Financially, the way R&C works is $1000 if you have < $1000 in need according to the FAFSA, and otherwise you get whatever the FAFSA says. So you wouldnā€™t need to worry about other scholarships or grants or lack of funds.

Does anyone know the deadline of sending out these invitations? I just know about their existences today.Lol

haha me to. I decided to look on the berkley thread for the first time today and saw people talking about it

correct me if Iā€™m wrong but I think all the invitations were sent last Fridayā€¦

you can always check your myBerkeley account to see if they left your email out of the list by accident (which is very unlikely)

Hey everyone! Quick question:

Letā€™s say I was invited to interview for the Regents scholarship but did not set up an interview for whatever reason. Does this still mean that Berkeley will most likely offer me admission? Or will Cal hate me?
