Is anyone else in Berkeleys TAP? I get so Many emails implying I've been admitted and I'm wondering if you other TAP kids get the same emails.

Wait, do you get emails asking you to join or telling you about the program?

And if you’re in the program I was wondering if you can tell me how you joined and if there’s any GPA requirement or any other requirement. Thank you.

Im in the program. I get emails telling me about all these things going on at Cal. The wordage and quantity all imply I’ve been admitted. So I was just wondering if it was a TAP thing.

And yes, TAP is at several schools. I’m not sure exactly which but I know it’s at a lot of the bigger CC’s (smc, el camino, de anza). TAP is actually not offered at my CC, I emailed the program coordinator, told him my story, faxed some transcripts and boom, TAP member. Basically you need to be low-income, first-generation, perhaps an URM but they can’t technically say that haha. I’ve heard of other people having to show how much money they make and what not but I didn’t have to do any of that.

The program coordinators name is Keith Schoon. If you google ‘Keith School Berkeley TAP’ I’m sure his email will pop up. It wasn’t hard for me to find.

Sorry about spelling and grammar. I’m writing this on my phone.

If you have any other questions, let me know!

I actually met Keith in August when he came down to LA. Cool guy, and I think I left a good impression. Hope that my admission decision reflects that.

But as far as those emails, I havent received many but I dont think that means much. Im in Tap

@Billionare - At El camino? I was there… He is a nice guy, him and Aileen really seem to care. I hope TAP pulls me through, since I’m way below average GPA wise. We’ll see.

Did you get the one about cheap housing for first gens/urm? Looked like a pretty good deal.

Yup, at Elco. You’re right they both seem caring.

Those TAP statistics sure do look promising though, since they help people with GPA’s between 3 and 4. I think they said they had an 80 something% acceptance rate for their TAP students. It seems like a HUUGE boost.

I saw that housing email as well, and it did look like a great deal but I dont think I will be going after that. I think I want to be in one of the big housing complexes with lots of people, not just 30 or so.

I’m in TAP and most recent email was last week regarding Cal Day (which I can’t go to). Something about Transfer Day too (which I can’t go to).

I am seriously not holding my breath for Berkeley this time (rejected a few years ago), but heck, it’s always worth a shot and TAP has certainly been helpful. Even if I do get in, my job is so demanding I have no idea how I’ll be able to take the course load required to be considered half-time. Alas!

Good fortune to everyone!

So how exactly is do they know your an URM, first generation, etc? Do you have to show proof or do they take your word for it?

For me they took my word for it. I’ve heard of other people having to show proof of being low income. I did not. As for being an URM, they can’t technically take that into account. Although you do meet your TAP coordinator, so lying probably wouldn’t be a good idea. ;)

I don’t remember how I got in, I did fill out an application but I don’t remember showing any verification. I go to ElCo so I get a chance to speak with Aileen frequently and basically said I was in after meeting with her. She said I met so-and-so requirement. I also went through the summer enrichment program (SEP) which was awesome. Met Schoon and the rest of the TAP personnel. All great people and genuinely care for their students.

Sorry for grave digging, but, does anyone know why the Berkeley TAP is sort of hidden from the general public? A lot of people think it doesn’t exist.

Because Berkeley TAP isn’t meant for the general public. It’s not like UCLA where everyone can join the program. It’s meant for low income people.

You don’t join tap. You get invited in. People who aren’t low income or first gen don’t get in.
