Berkeley/UCLA Anthropology transfers

Hey all

I am going to be applying as an Anthro Major this Fall. I was wondering how competitive the Anthropology dept. is for Berkeley and UCLA. I heard Anthro is impacted at both schools.

I have a 3.81 transferable GPA (with at least one more semester to bring it up)
a 4.0 major GPA, with Cultural Anthro being an Honors Course
I am TAP certified (for UCLA)
PTK
Presented research at the HTCC conference at UCI
Non-traditional adult student, quit working to back to school, will be 30 when I transfer, support myself, no family in California.
Work 5-30 hours a week. Go to school full time (normally 15+ units per semester)

Any tips or inside information from those who got into either school as an Anthro major?
And if you got it, how do you like it there?

I think you will be admitted to both schools, seeing you have a relatively high GPA and TAP plus good ECs.

Anthro is not necessarily impacted at UCLA or Cal. It’s actually quite ‘easy’ to get into UCLA’s anthro program seeing that their average admitted GPA is 3.56 with a 67% rate.

Cal, however, does not accept by the major but groups all social sciences (including anthropology) the same when reviewing our applications. I think the social sciences admit rate is lower than 20%.

you’ll get into both. i had a bad fall quarter my 2nd year at CC (one B, one B+, and 2 Ws) which ended up being a 3.61 when i applied. i applied under anthropology and got in both ucla and cal and my extra-curricular activities do not match up to yours. im going to cal this fall so can’t say much on how it is so far.

I had a 3.5x and got into UCLA but not Cal.
Another anthro major on here had a 3.7x and had the same results.

But you have a good chance at Cal. TAP is clutch for UCLA.

Yeah, I’m not sure if Erikuh is talking about me or someone else, but I had a 3.7 and was rejected from Cal, but in at UCLA. GO BRUINS! :D

I’m talking about you Evan lol!

Anthro major applications are numerous for both schools because it is pretty much a useless degree. People apply for anthro major because it’d be easier to get in with. You’ll get into both unless a ridiculous amount of anthro hopefuls apply as well. And keep in mind that you probably will not be able to change your major once you get in.

^ Um, screw you?

anonymous is true with his words of wiseness!

I’m so tired of people putting down other majors. If you don’t want to study anthropology- DON’T. But don’t call my field of interest “useless.”

Grow up.

I agree with evan. **** anon, people will do what they please with the degree they get. Hell, you never know, with your supposed superior major, you could become a manager at the local MickeyD’s. But, kudos to your close-mindedness, it’s cute to read about.

I’m also trying for anthro!

You should get into both schools. I think Anthro is an awesome major! Especially Physical/Biological Anthropology. I just completed 60 units @ my CC and my Physical Anthro class was my favorite by far.

TAP certified for UCLA? I’m pretty sure you’ll get in then, LOL. Cal is unpredictable, but you have a good GPA and compelling stats so possibly in at Cal as well

SMCguy, who did you take for Physical may I ask? Oh yeah GIS is Tuesday night with Cambell not Drake this spring.

Also, this is nothing against Cal, but UCLAs Anthro program is just more interesting. UCSB’s and Chico States programs are the better schools for it though for undergrad.

UCLA’s anthropology department is far superior to Berkeleys and is one of the best in the world, but only if you are studying biological anthropology. Their cultural department is pretty weak, but thats true of the entire field at the moment, as post modernism and the standard social science model have stripped it from any sort of scientfic foundation.
