Berkeley's rep, or lack thereof, on the east coast

I was talking to a few friends of mine the other day, both of whom are from the east coast, and they said they had never heard of Berkeley, much less it's prestige, prior to moving to California. Needless to say, I was kind of shocked. Is this normal or do I just happen to be friends with two idiots?

Of course Berkeley's got a GREAT rep here on the east coast...my son is still crying in his soup over not being able to accept their offer of transfer admission due to the lack of funds available for out-of-staters!!

Not gonna lie, it sounds like you're friends with two mild idiots. Berkeley has an amazing reputation in the East. Everyone knows it's a great school, though many don't know its public. Many of those who know of it, also know of its...er...somewhat activist past while others know it as a place of stoners and LSD-users (i'm just reporting what I hear, don't shoot the messenger). BUT, that being said, everyone knows it to be a great school academically, and somewhere that is very difficult to get into. I've heard rumors that the gov't has issues hiring people from some specific Berkeley department, but like I said, probably just rumors.

ditto to everyone's response. i dont know anyone who doesnt know of Berkeley...and ive lived in the North part of the East Coast as well as the South. i only imagine the people that dont know of Berkeley are...maybe sheltered? (to be polite)

wow your basing your opinion on a few friends...cal is well known everywhere

yea thers actually an argument on some other board, i cant remember which one, and they wer sitting there arguing how Berkeley is a world-wide university... meaning that its known all over the world and its great blah blah... yea man berkeley is good.

Thanks everyone for your input.

Don't get me wrong. I think Berkeley is an outstanding school, in fact, I like to think I am one of their biggest fans! So I was a little surprised when I was exercising my bragging rights of being accepted into Cal that these two friends of mine acted unimpressed. It made me wonder if 1) they really had never heard of it as they claim or 2) they are just jealous because I will be going to a better school they did. Who knows.

By the way..one went to Penn State and the other LeHigh.

Did you say "Cal" or "UC Berkeley." I didn't know the two were the same school until senior year of high school. I'm sure the amount of people who know Cal > the amount of people who know UC Berkeley. Just like more people would probably know Texas over UT-Austin or UNC over UNC-Chapel Hill or Illinois over UIUC.

ok im confused is there and if so what is the diff. b/t Cal and UC Berkeley. Im (of course) familiar w/ berkeley but not so much cal...

in which case...ignore my previos post

Cal = Berkeley, it was the first public university in California, and hence the first UC so it is also called Cal in addition to UCBerkeley

no way. uc berkeley is the famous term lol i think uc berkeley is internationally known, and Cal just seems more like a domestic nickname.

Maybe your friends was being sarcastic cause you was "exercising your bragging rights."

i've always thought cal as a prestigious school, but it seems like some ppl on cc thinks cal is nothing compared to schools on the east coast

Most all of my family lives on the east coast, and they all seemed to recognize Berkeley and its prestige/reputation/whatever.

Xymom I can relate to how your son feels, as I too have no idea how I’m going to finance Berkeley as an out of state student. Concerning the original question, most here in Connecticut are well aware of Berkeley, however, Berkeley in my opinion seems to perhaps be less “popular” around here in comparison to the other schools on the same level (I obviously disagree).

my thoughts exactly.

do your thoughts generally have subject/verb disagreements?

lol, why you tryin to pick a fight with me now? i mean you've already been discredited on this board for showing off like crazy about yur ucb admit and then talking down those that got into ucla and talkin about how you're the hottest, smartest, and spolied girl in OC

anyways, there is no verb in the phrase that i used, so there can be no subject-verb agreement or as you said, "disagreement."

hey..I'm not the one waiting for my berkeley appeal that will never happen...

You responded to, "Maybe your friends was being sarcastic cause you was "exercising your bragging rights." with "my thoughts exactly."

Apparently, your thoughts EXACTLY are, "maybe your friends was.."...need I say more? or do you now understand what I mean by subject/verb disagreement??

That was reachin4thestars' thought EXACTLY, not LITERALLY.

Edit: :)
