Hello, Starting to plan 2nd child's college road trip, and Michigan State U is one of her top looks. Which airport is best to fly into to visit? Thanks!

Probably depends on where you’re flying from.

Detroit Metro (DTW) is about an hour and 15 minutes from MSU.
Grand Raids (Gerald Ford International Airport) is like an hour from MSU.
Lansing (Capital Region International Airport) is like 20 minutes away from MSU.

Detroit Metro will obviously have the most direct flights. I know Lansing has direct flights from Chicago, Orlando, Minneapolis, and DC. I don’t see any real reason to fly to Grand Rapids since it’s not that much closer than DTW.

thank you! I found that there is a direct flight from detroit. Is it pretty easy to navigate in and out of the airport? I assume it is very large.

If we went with Lansing, is that a smaller airport? easy 20 minute drive?

Yeah, Metro is a big airport, but it’s smaller than a lot of other major airports. Only thing is when you’re leaving you have to be VERY careful not to speed (not even 5 over) because Romulus cops love to camp out and catch unsuspecting speeders.

I’ve never been to the Lansing airport, but I imagine it’s not that large. You can go on Google maps and get directions from the airport to MSU, but you could go Grand River Ave–>N Cedar Street–>E Saginaw Street–>Howard Ave–>US-127 S -->Trowbridge Road.

Thank you! The advice about not speeding is priceless…I will DEFINITELY stick to the speed limit.

Lansing’s airport is small but nice. It has only a few gates. Very easy to get in and out of and there are lots of taxis around Lansing and East Lansing to get you to and from MSU.

I flew into Detroit one time and didn’t realize the airport had two buildings and had to take a shuttle to the other building.

You might also want to look at the Michigan Flyer which is a bus to and from the airports and East Lansing.

Check the Sun Country website for flights to the Lansing airport. They don’t always show up when you search the bigger travel websites, but they are a nice airline with quite a few flight into/out of Lansing. We use it pretty often to visit my parents, who live not far from there.

Where are you flying from? When I was flying to/from Florida, I actually found cheaper flights directly to Lansing than DTW. It’s worth looking in to.
