I will be taking APUSH this year, and due to the fact that my teacher is, to put it charitably, quite lenient, I will need a good review book, like Princeton, 5 Steps, etc. for class just in case. (I did the same thing for Euro, studied out of the Princeton Review book and got a 4, but I’d like to get a five this go-round.) What book do you recommend? I’ve heard Princeton is good, but what book do you think is the best? I will be buying only one so I want to get the most for my money.
Thanks!

My teacher gave us the American Pageant which was very helpful. Outside of class I went and bought Kaplan APUSH book which had 2 practice test, chapter review and questions after each section. All of the questions in this book include explanations. I found that they both provided good information.

AMSCO. No other review book comes close.

Other than that, I liked PR, Crash Course, Barron’s 500 flash cards (Barron’s book is terrible though). 5/800 on USH.

^when you say Barron’s is bad, are you referring to the newest version (2012) or the older ones? Because I know the old ones have bad content review and stuff but the newest one seems to be completely updated and changed. It has content review and positive reviews on Amazon, so I was considering getting it. Thanks

Thanks for the responses! What I really am looking for is a book that will teach me absolutely everything, as though I was self-studying, because otherwise I won’t know anything. I used Princeton Review last go round but it didn’t really help so much (though part could have been because I woke up about two weeks to the test and started studying…).
I’m actually getting the AMSCO book and American Pageant from my school, which is pretty cool! Can I manage on that alone? Do they have practice tests? Which books have the best practice tests?
Thanks!

For final test prep and review I didn’t even look at the American Pageant book or the outlines I did for each chapter. It gives too much information and details for final week review before the AP. Kaplan has good practice tests and was the only review I did right before the test. It is my go to book for test review. I have never used another test prep book so I do not know how it compares but am very happy with Kaplan.

^ no, no, no, no, no! I used Barrons last year and it had so many errors on the diagnosis and tests throughout the book. I normally like Barron’s, but it let me down for APUSH. Princeton is a good review book, and somewhat helpful to learn material.
Sent from my iPhone

^ lol, what are you talking about? Princeton has more errors than barrons. That’s what my teacher said.

and like I said, use apexamreview.com for practice exams. They are way better than any paper based book since that site uses software to grade the exam.

I used Princeton and found 2 glaring errors. I think the rest was okay, though.
I tried to use Crash Course but it left out so much and had so many gaps and a few errors so I ditched it. My friends lived on it though (and I don’t know how they did on the test, so…).

^ well, to say the least don’t use review books as a replacement for actual reading the textbook. Lots of people do that and they end up getting screwed. Only 50% of people pass APUSH. The other 50% probably just try to cram last minute using review books, bad idea.

Yeah, well, that’s what I did :(. Got a 4 from Princeton Review. Had a very, well, laid-back teacher. We didn’t finish the material in time. Barely learned anything. Etc. There wasn’t much choice, and the textbook was waaaay too long.
This year I’ll probably end up reading the AMSCO book and American Pageant.

Hannah, yup. A 4 is a decent score to get. Only like 10% get a 5. The problem is that people say, “you only need a review book to pass” which makes it sound like you can just cram last minute and you’ll pass with flying colors. In reality, the people who pass by only using a review book are also using alot of other supplemental materials to pass, such as online resources. Clearly anyone who actually takes the time to post on this forum is clearly more motivated than someone who just takes the class and does nothing else.
