Fairly straightforward question. Any suggestions for compact, good quality speakers?
I did a little research, most people tend to suggest Logitech x230 or z4, although I've seen a few positive reviews of various Altec Lansings. Care to verify either of those, or suggest another?

As many watts as you can get. Also, get a strobe light and fog machine for dorm dance parties.

klipsch 2.1

I bought a pair of refurbished Altec Lansings at Job Lot for somewhere around $20 and they are really good.

Is it typical for roomates to listen to music with headphones? I would hate to have a roommate who blasts music with speakers. Ever. Actually, even if it is not too loud but I can still hear. At any time of the day. That's just the way I am - but would this come up on the quiz thing that most universities use to pair roommates? But I don't want to get stuck with someone boring - like me.

More so than every kids have their headphones plugged in...invest in a great pair of noise cancelling headphones.

I blast my music. My roommates try telling me to keep it down, but I can't stop when I listen to Sound Tribe Sector Nine.

The loudest and best speakers ever!!!! No one cares because everyone is in their headphones....they won't hear the speakers

Thanks for the suggestions.
@dean5150, of course headphones would be the default in most situations, but there is definitely something to be said for having a pair of wall-shaking speakers for Saturday nights when you don't have to worry about interrupting anyone's studying.

I have JBL Creature II speakers and I like them a lot; they don't take up too much space on my desk but they have pretty good sound quality, and the subwoofer makes all the difference in the world. I think they've been discontinued though.

Lol. What schools do you guys attend? I've never in my college career come across a hall that was completely quiet. If not for the loud rumblings of someone's television, you can almost always hear music blasting, save for finals week. Some of you are going to be in for a rude awakening. I suggest getting used to working in non-quiet environments asap.

As for threadstarter, I have a pair of clear Harmon Kardon soundsticks (2.1 setup). They're loud and they look really nice.

Get the Logitech Z-5500s off Amazon. They have enough inputs for basically anything you want to plug in them, including a TosLink input for optical and direct input for the ipod (not a dock but the headphone port). They put out 505 Watts, and come with a remote as well.
I use them in my barracks room for my computer and xbox, and they thump pretty well, especially with the optical in, which lets you hear directional sound perfectly (CoD4 advantage.)
I actually am going to buy another set for my tv so I can have 5.1 for that too.
I highly recommend, and they price is not unreasonable, considering they will last for quite a while.
They go for around 250 bucks right now, and there are plenty of reviews on Amazon if you don't want to take my word for it.
One note though, the sub is a bit large, so if you are looking for a little 2.1 set to fit on your desk these aren't what you're looking for, it has 4 speakers, a center and a sub.
