i've heard good things about BECU. US Bank looks like it's everywhere. any suggestions?

BECU’s great. My dad works at Boeing so we’ve used BECU for a very long time and there’s rarely been any problems!

BECU is amazing. They have a branch and ATM on the Ave as well as an ATM in Suzzallo Library. They may have more ATMs on campus but I haven’t found them.

I’m with BECU and I love it. They also have an ATM in McMahon Hall Lobby if you live on North Campus.

It depends on your banking needs.

BECU is a great credit union, for example. They have lots of fee-free ATMs, good customer service, 6% interest checking and savings accounts, and all of this is free. However, I found it hard to get a credit card from them the first time (now I have an unsecured from them). There are some limitations - you cannot withdraw more than $1000 in one day (unless you go to their main office in Tukwila), deposits can be made at an ATM only (although there are branches of OTHER credit unions that can help with withdrawing/depositing, but there aren’t many).

US Bank is bigger and I would expect more lending power from it. It means getting a credit card from them might be easier. I also think that they are all over the US, which makes having an account with them more flexible. If you move somewhere else, you can keep your account.

If you plan to move later, I would suggest establishing a relationship with a big bank. If you plan to stay in WA (Seattle in particular), BECU is your choice.

So I already have been using a chase debit card for a few years now, would I be smart to change to becu or would I be fine finding a chase close to campus?

Also, after looking at becu I was wondering if I had to have ties to Boeing to get the 6% checkings or if anyone could walk in and get that account?

Everyone should be using a credit union over a bank when looking for a checking/savings account. Credit unions are non-profit, banks are for profit. In other words, way less fees and higher interest (on average). Also the customer service at any credit union is way better then any bank that I’ve experienced.

I’ve heard BECU is great, AlaskaUSA is great

EricJPrice, again, it depends If you are satisfied with Chase I don’t see a reason why you should change it. There is actually a Chase branch on University Way and their ATM network is quite extensive.

You don’t have to have ties to Boeing to get an account with BECU. Everyone who lives in WA is eligible. 6% isn’t for the entire balance - it’s if you have <$500 on the balance. So, if if your average balance is about $400 both on Checking and Savings, you will get about $48 in interest/year. Doesn’t sound like a lot, but it’s better than paying for an account.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like we’ll go with BECU.
