I am currently a HS Junior at a competitive public HS in CT. UConn is by far my #1 choice, I'm afraid I might not have the grades (around a 3.2 gpa, taking the SAT in May, decent ECs). What are my best chances for admission into UConn? Apply Early Action? One of my friends said the best bet is to apply right away for the Regular admission (Feb 1st deadline)?

For the essay, should I mention that it is my first choice?

Also, how much of a factor does 1st semester Senior year have an impact on getting in? Is it significant, or is it just mostly centered around Junior year??

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

What's your class rank? UConn really obsesses on that, so being out of the top 20% or so could hurt. For the SAT, make sure to score an 1800+ if possible, and apply within the first few weeks that the application is released. This year, it was released around Sept. 15th or so. Make sure to keep up great grades in the 1st half of senior year, and you should be good.

btw, what HS are you at? UConn is very lenient about accepting kids from certain schools. Not mine though, the #10 kid in my class (female/asian) was rejected...BUT her SAT's were below 1000 on the old scale.

Our school actually got rid of the class rank a few years back, their reasoning was that it ended up bringing down a lot of kids who would be much higher up on the % scale at other schools.

I go to Hall High School in West Hartford, Connecticut. I think for the most its looked upon well by UConn, but I'm not positive. I'll be sure to apply early, hopefully I can pull out a good score on the SAT, been doing a lot of practice tests :)

I feel like this thing is just sometimes like a crap shoot, can go either way pretty easily. I have a friend with a 3.1 and around a 1700 SAT who was accepted but another friend with much higher stats get denied.

Yup, HHS is definitely known as a good UConn feeder school, which helps you a bit. I'm just urging you to get that application in early. It really helps, and the essay shouldn't take you longer than a week MAX to complete. The essay is the only part of the application you can't do on the spot (well, you can...like I did). The rest is a breeze.

Yup, UConn definitely is awesome. The campus is SO underrated it's not even funny. Nearly every academic building looks as nice and as high-tech as a rocket ship, yet you never hear people talk about the UConn campus. UConn also has some really nice dorms as well, and the food is good too.

actually the size of the campus doesnt really impress me, its soooo big its not even funny. but everything else makes for that =) the dorm is terrific and so are the food. good choice in choosing uconn. GO HUSKIES.

It is definitely not a big campus. You think so for about 1 week. Then it becomes small and you realize at most you are walking 10 min from one side of campus to the other.
