Does UT or TAMU with engineering honors have a better chance of landing me in a good graduate program?
I know that graduate programs look at research and internships. So which one is better at those? Are there even opportunities around Texas A&M for school year internships since it’s a small college town?
Also, does the honors program itself or its benefits have much impact on my graduate application?
Thanks.
Define “good”
Regardless of what undergrad school you go to, you will still go to a “good” graduate school as long as you work hard for it.
@MrElonMusk good as in top, renowned, etc. I’m asking for graduate programs in general.
Of course I know that if you work hard you will get into a good graduate program. My question is which school has more opportunities.
You can get into an excellent graduate program from either school, and it’s unclear whether either of them has “better” chances or opportunities for preparing you. Both have lots of research opportunities and strengths in engineering.
Yes, the honors program can have concrete benefits/impact on your graduate application. It kind of depends on the offerings.
Research is fairly pointless at the undergraduate level anyway. Internships are only useful as practical work experience for employers. Graduate schools are interested mainly in the grades for the last 2 years and your GRE/GMAT scores. Choosing between UT or Texas A&M is like choosing between 2 different shades of baby blue. It’s really just a matter of preference. In fact, there’s such a small portion of people with masters degrees that you’d be just as well off going to Texas State or UTSA.
@coolguy40 really? I got very different opinions from people who actually went through graduate school. Are you speaking from experience or speculation?
@pthunder I’m speaking from experience as someone who has a masters degree.
@juillet Can you confirm the first line of post #4?

It is established that research is important. Now can someone answer what I’m asking, which is whether the FRI at UT or the Engineering Honors at TAMU will provide a more effective and impactful research experience. I forgot to include the detail about the FRI in my original post, so I’m asking this now. Either way, I must come to a decision this weekend.
You seem like a resourceful lad and have done your research. Asking us is a fools errand.
Research is crucial for graduate school (not for professional school, although it can be a boost depending on what you’re doing and where you’re going).
Did you get into any sort of Honors program at UT?
