Well that kind of dilutes it being a war. I mean part of the thing about the Utah/BYU rivalry is that BYU is the school for the more affluent Mormons while Utah was for the less wealthy and non-Mormons. Because of this, the rivalry is a division in class, religion, and even race. This is probably less the case now than it was years ago, and it may not make it the “best” rivalry, but it is certainly one of the more unique ones.

To ACC fans (and in the South in general), I am sure the Duke vs UNC rivalry has no equal, just like to Big 10 fans (and in the Midwest in general), the Michigan vs OSU rivalry has no equal. Nationally, both tend to have a huge following.

“Well that [both St Joe’s and Villanova both being Catholic] kind of dilutes it being a war.”

Not really. The Boston College/Notre Dame relationship (their games are also referred to as Holy Wars) is filled with some pretty frothy dislike. As with Villanova/St. Joe’s, one is Jesuit and the other isn’t. That makes a difference to some Catholics, but I think BC/ND have a long enough history of conflict that even if they were both Jesuit or both non-Jesuit, there would be a nasty relationship. Notre Dame stole BC’s football coach/shameless liar Frank Leahy in 1940, and many at BC are still ticked off about it:

From Wikipedia:
Although he had recently signed a contract renewal at BC, Leahy accepted the head coaching position at his alma mater, Notre Dame. He tried without success to get out of his BC contract. He pleaded to the school’s vice president. When that didn’t work, he went to the mayor of Boston. Then the governor of Massachusetts. Then, at a press conference, he told 50 reporters what the South Bend Tribune called “the biggest lie of his life”. Leahy stated: “Gentlemen I’ve called you all here today to inform you that I recently received my release from my coaching contract. With the release went the good wishes and benediction of Boston College.” Leahy stepped away, and the buzzing group of reporters battled for phone lines. A phone call came in for Leahy, and he took it.The vice president of Boston College was on the line. “Coach, Leahy,” he barked. “You may go wherever you want, and whenever you want. Good-bye.”

ACC expansion just irritates me. Duke, UNC, Wake, and NC State should play each other twice a year. I could care less about games with Boston College or Miami quite frankly.

Erm, SJU/Nova is the same way; Nova kids are generally very wealthy kids from suburban Boston/Long Island/NJ/CT and SJU kids are middle class from those areas as well as Catholic school kids from Philly.
