which colleges have nice college towns, or even just a few exciting streets nearby, with shops and restaurants and stuff?

(relatively selective schools, please)

Indiana University, Bloomington
U of Wisconsin, Madison
U of Oklahoma, Norman
Kansas U, Lawrence
U of Missouri, Columbia

The University of Michigan-Ann Arbor of course!

I like Athens, GA. (and Bloomington, of course)

I agree with Bloomington and Ann Arbor.

Cornell in Ithaca
UT in Austin

Princeton, NJ of course

The University of California at Davis has a great college town feel. Although it’s not as selective, CSU Chico in Northern California has a great college town feeling, too.

Claremont, CA. The downtown “village” has great shops, restaurants, and tons of charm. The streets surrounding the Claremont Colleges are full of Queen Anne style Victorian and Craftsman houses.

Dartmouth-Hanover,NH

boston hands down!!! i cant believe some of these answers! you know what’s in ithaca and hanover? NOTHING

UNC Chapel Hill!!!

Ann Arbor, MI
Athens, GA
Austin, TX
Boulder, CO
Bloomington, IN
Burlington, VA
Chapel Hill, NC
Charlottesville, VA
Columbia, MO
Gainesville, FL
Madison, WI

Cornell University. Any other suggestions are inferior to such a school of this caliber :)

Evanston, IL (the first lakefront town north of Chicago)
http://www.evanstondowntown.com/images/stories/evmark/pdf/evm010_directory_k1.pdf shows that there are almost 90 dining places in the downtown area and within walking distance from Northwestern campus.
There are also Borders, Barnes & Nobles, and Cinemark theater in downtown.

Just about half mile south of downtown, there is a little shopping/dining district centering around the Main Street subway station.

Amherst, MA is often cited as a great college town. Also Northampton, MA.

According to the Princeton Review, New York City is the best college “town” around.

do you want a good college town or a good city filled with colleges? if the latter: boston, nyc, chicago and pittsburgh. If the former: chapel hill, ithaca, ann arbor, athens, etc. I’m sure I’m missing plenty of amazing collegetowns

also im biased but i absolutely love charlottesville. very excited to be going there, its a great college town

When we discuss “college towns”, I don’t include places like NYC, Boston or even Nashville. I consider places that basically exist because of the college. That said, I personally would hate going to college in NYC, or even Boston for that matter. But that’s me.
