Hi everyone. My high school senior was not accepted into Northeastern even though he is right on the line in the admissions software analysis. He is CRUSHED. I would really appreciate any insight into what colleges + universities have the best record, or closest relationship, with NORTHEASTERN U admissions, so that we might adjust the other schools he is applying to so he can re-apply as a first-year transfer and have the best chance to get into NORTHEASTERN as a transfer. I am very aware of all the logic/analysis/psychology of "there's a school for every kid" having gone through this myself. I just need some intel I can use to help figure out my problem. Thanks to anyone and everyone has has any information!

I wish I knew the answer to that. I am sorry for your son. My daughter has applied EA and she feels the same way about NEU. She is very anxious to get the news

what is your son’s stats?

Knowing your sons stats would really help. My daughter is a freshman and loves NEU, but it is extremely challenging. Your son may be very much up for the workload, but be sure he is before Persueing this. My daughter was accepted EA last year and received merit, but did not get into honors program which means she was in top 25% but not top 10%. As someone in this category she finds the coursework rigorous. Her stats were as follows.
SATs 2240
ACTs 34
8 APs all with4s or 5s.
Yearbook editor, lots of volunteer hours, excellent essay and recommendations. Her new Northeastern friends have similar stats and are working their tails off to succeed. If your son is up for this rigor and is determined to go here than it’s probably worth the fight. Obviously his stats would determine the best school for him to transfer from. Good luck to you and your son, I hope it works out in his best interest.

Hi everyone. My son has a 3.2 GPA and a 32 on the ACT. He has very good extracirruculars including a lot of volunteering. We were a little worried about the GPA. Thanks everyone for helping out here.

First, I’m sorry. It’s tough when you don’t make ‘the cut’ and don’t really know exactly why (except the standard 'most competitive year, blah blah blah) Which school did he apply to at NEU? And what is his intended major? For schools that ask you to identify a specific major/college, that can make a difference - some are more competitive than others. (i.e. Wharton at Penn, Engineering at a ton of top schools) Where he should apply depends in part on what his (at this stage anyway) intended major is. More background would help in terms of making recommendations.

4Gulls: Thank you. I think he applied to the School of Social Sciences + Humanities. He has been wavering between Environmental Studies (which would be the School of Science) and international business (he has been taking Mandarin for 3 years and plans to continue).

The Mandarin is cool! What other schools does he have on his list? Does he have a preference big vs. small, urban vs. rural, east coast vs. west coast vs. midwest? I would think (and I’m no expert) that he’d want to be at a school that was in the same “range” as NEU (i.e. +/- 20 rankings or so on the dreaded USNews). Will he need financial aid? If so, does NEU offer FA for transfers? My S got into NEU EA (love all the acronyms!) last year - but their financial aid was not enough given we’ve got 2 in college at one time. I think it’s a good thing to keep transfer on the radar, but he also has to find someplace where he’d be happy & thrive for Fall 2015.

4gulls: We are looking mostly east coast as I will have 4 kids in college for the next 2 years! Nightmare scenario, right? So we will definitely need financial aid. He is looking at: Elon; U of Richmond; Drexel; 2 of our SUNY schools (we live in NY state); BU; Pitt; Tulane; I can’t remember all the rest. He seems to be doing much better after 2 days of reflection, so, yes, we’re looking for a school he will love but that might let him transfer to Northeastern.

Excellent schools on the list. Which SUNYs is he looking at? Binghamton & Stony Brook? Stony Brook is great - and if he gets invited to Honors College there (only about 60 kids I think) and does well would be a plus for transfer. Good environmental science stuff there, too. A good friend’s son is sophomore in Honors College and really likes it. Did he already apply Tulane, Richmond and BU? I do believe most of these have cut-off application dates in order to be eligible for scholarships. We’ve got experience with all 3 - and I will say BU did NOT give us much in terms of Financial Aid which was too bad. Tulane was great - but my son ultimately opted for elsewhere (long story). Both kids got into Drexel and Drexel sweetened the pot several times by upping FA. Not sure ranking wise where Drexel falls vs. NEU - but both have coop programs so that might work in your favor. The bigger question is this: Is he dead-set on transferring to NEU or is he actively seeking “Plan B”?

Honestly, as long as he gets good grades at whatever school he goes to, he will be fine.
