Sorry that there are so many colleges on the list. I searched old forums to find these.

some say that kenyon's is the best in the country. plus they have the Kenyon Review, this really famous literary periodical that undergrads get to work on. I've also heard great things about Middlebury's English department. You'd want a focus in literature, right, not in creative writing?

Doesn't Middlebury have the special Breadloaf writing program? Or is that a grad level course of study?

Aside from a few highly specialized schools (e.g. conservatories, art institutes, military academies, technical institutes, the Webb Institute of Naval Architecture, General Motors Institute, and Hamburger University), you can study English lit. just about anywhere. Pick a school that's an overall good fit for you.

When you're doing your search make sure they have a strong lit, not just writing program. Kenyon is a very good school in that aspect. It has a very strong english program, one worth looking into. The only other one I'll comment on is sarah lawrence. It's probably one of the most writing intensive schools in the US. No matter what your concentration is, from math to italian, you will be writing more than at your average school.
